Barbara Hayes-Roth Award for Women in Math and Computer Science

Barbara Hayes- Roth Award for Women in Math and Computer Science is a merit based scholarship offered to female students demonstrating outstanding academic excellence in University of Waterloo. The female students must be enrolled into a full time masters or doctorate program in faculty of mathematics or computer science.

  • Students with a 80% cumulative average in either masters or doctorate program in mathematics or computer science will be awarded with an amount of 1200 CAD (68,800 INR).
  • Preference will be given to students pursuing masters and doctorate programme in computer science over the ones pursuing mathematics
  • As it is a continuing scholarship, candidates pursuing mathematics and computer science will be evaluated on the basis of their academic performance in the previous year of study.
  • The aim of this scholarship is to provide at least one award with the amount of minimum1200 CAD annually.

The value or the amount granted changes on a yearly basis. The number of awards offered also varies annually.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for Barbara Hayes- Roth Award for women in Math and Computer Science, applicants are required to meet the below mentioned entry requirements:

  • Enrolled into a full-time masters or doctoral program in the Faculty of Mathematics or Computer Science.
    • Computer Science students are preferred over Mathematics.
  • Demonstrate outstanding academic record with 80% cumulative average in the current program
  • Candidates pursuing the following programs will only be eligible for the Barbara Hayes- Roth Award for women in Math and Computer Science:
    • Mathematics – applied mathematics,
    • Combinatorics, optimisation,
    • Computational mathematics,
    • Computer science,
    • Mathematics for teachers,
    • Pure mathematics,
    • Quantitative finance,
    • Statistics and Actuarial Science.
  • Only the female graduate students will be eligible for the scholarship

Students are not required to submit any additional forms. Students will be assessed based on their application for admission at University of Waterloo.


Selection Process

The outstanding female graduate students are selected automatically by the faculty or the department, every year for Barbara Hayes- Roth Award for women in Math and Computer Science.

  • The scholarship is only applicable for the fall term and shall cover only tuition fees of the program.
  • The preference is given to female students pursuing a computer science degree program.
  • The amount or the number of awards might vary every year. While the endowment is building, the donor will support the word with a 2000 CAD award.

The most important goal of Barbara Hayes- Roth Award for women in Math and Computer Science is to award at least one award to a female graduate student. Funding of this scholarship was possible only because of the efforts of David Ash’ 87 who wanted to support the excellence of the future female generation in graduate studies and research.
