Grant Lingard Scholarship

Grant Lingard Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students entering the final year of their undergraduate studies. This University of Canterbury scholarship is limited to students admitted in School of Fine Arts.

  • Students displaying outstanding academic excellence are considered, therefore, selections are based on academic merit.
  • In case if two or more applicants have secured equal or similar academic scores or merit, preference will be given to the student whose family is located in the west coast region of the South Island of New Zealand.
  • As a part of the application process, applicants need to submit a short statement of about 300 words.

Scholarship covers the full time tuition fees at the domestic fee-paying rate, meaning international students have to pay the difference. Furthemore, since the Grant Lingard Scholarship is designed for final-year students, the scholarship is non-renewable.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the Grant Lingard Scholarship- University of Canterbury, the applicants must meet the below mentioned eligibility requirements:

The scholarship program is limited to the full-time students only. Distance and part-time students are not eligible for it.


Application Process

Applicants must follow the following steps while applying for Grant Lingard Scholarship:

  1. Apply for the undergraduate BFA degree program at the University of Canterbury.
  2. Complete the online scholarship application form
  3. Upload the required documents
  4. Submit the application form

Eligible applicants are required to submit their scholarship applications before October 31.

Supporting Documents

The below mentioned supporting documents are to be submitted along with the scholarship application:

  • Copies of academic transcripts
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)/ resume
  • Copy of passport
  • English language proficiency test scores
  • Additional documents with details about your academic qualifications

In addition to the above-mentioned documents, candidates are required to submit a short statement highlighting their projected studio work for the year in which the scholarship amount is granted. Furthermore, the statement candidates should state their reasons for doing that specific work.


Selection Process

Selections for the scholarships are based on academic merit in previous years of the study. The committee also evaluates the candidates on the basis of their short statement. The selection committee for Grant Lingard Scholarship comprises of:

  • Vice chancellor or nominee
  • Head of school of fine arts
  • Dean of creative arts and nominee
  • Representative of the Lingard family

Note: The selection committee might refrain from awarding any candidate in case no applicant has sufficient merit


Grant Details

Some of the terms and conditions for the Grant Lingard Scholarship is mentioned below:

  • The scholarship has a tenure of just one year and comprises of a credit to the students fee account in the year following scholarship application
  • The number of scholarships awarded might vary each year. It is determined by the amount of funds available for disbursement according to the universities investment policy.
  • The benefits of the scholarship includes tuition fees waiver at the domestic rate for one year, which is when the selected candidate enters the final year of the BFA degree program
  • The Grand Lingard Scholarships may be terminated by the council at any time on the receipt of a report from the head of the school of fine arts about a bad conduct or downfall in the progress of the awarded candidate. The candidate might also be asked to repay some or all of the scholarship amount

The scholarships maybe held with any other scholarship, bursary, prize or fellowship unless the conditions of the other award preclude it.
