NUI Hardiman Research Scholarship

NUI Hardiman Research Scholarship is a fully-funded scholarship offered to students who wish to enroll in the Ph.D. programs offered at the National University of Ireland. Recipients will also get an annual stipend of 18,500 EUR anually.

  • Students entering in any full-time structured Ph.D. course at NUI are eligible.
  • Current Ph.D. students cannot apply for NUI Hardiman Research Scholarship.
  • It is important to nominate a supervisor and complete the supervisor form at NUI for the scholarship.
  • Applicants must meet academic and English language requirements for the same.

Eligibility Criteria

The NUI Hardiman Research Scholarship is offered to Ph.D. students enrolled in full-time research courses at the National University of Ireland. To be eligible for the same, applicants must meet the criteria mentioned below:

  • Applicant must hold first or upper second class honors primary degree or equivalent.
  • Must meet English Language Requirements as specified by the university.

Note: Current Ph.D. Scholars are not eligible for this scholarship.


Application Process

Application for NUI Hardiman Research Scholarship should be submitted online. The applicant must carefully go through the Applicant's Guide before initiating the online application process which consists of the following steps:

  • Before submitting the application, the candidate must choose and nominate a Ph.D. supervisor who shall discuss Ph.D. research plans.
    • It is also important to contact the potential supervisor.
  • The application form comprises of:
    •  Ph.D. Supervisor form
    • Application form
    • Two academic references.
  • Complete applications must be submitted at hrscholar@nuigalway.ie.
    • Resubmission or subsequent changes in the application is not allowed.

Applications are accepted only in English or Irish language. Late or incomplete applications are not assessed.


Selection Process

The National University of Ireland, Galway has specified selection criteria to assess the applications for NUI Hardiman Research Scholarship. Three assessors belonging to different backgrounds shall assess the application

There are four main sections in the application form which are mainly assessed by the assessors. Each section carries different marks or points.

  • Personal Research Statement (max. 50 points)
  • Academic Qualifications (max. 30 points)
  • Referees’ reports (max. 10 points)
  • Prior Research Experience (max. 10 points)

All shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by the selection panel at the university.


Grant Details

Students who wish to study in Ireland at NUI with some financial help may apply for NUI Hardiman Research Scholarship.

NUI Hardiman Research Scholarship for Ph.D. students is a fully-funded scholarship with a stipend of 16,000 EUR annually.

Recipients will be selected based on responses in the application form. Interviews of shortlisted candidates will be taken before winners are announced.
