American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship

American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship program is designed for international students entering the university to pursue a UG degree. The scholarship program is applicable to all the American University UG programs.

  • The AU Emerging Global Scholarship is awarded to only one deserving international student.
  • The AU EGLS scholarship covers the recipient’s AU tuition fees and accommodation.
    • The average cost of attendance for UG students is 39,761 USD.
  • Preference will be given to applications submitted for Regular Fall decisions.
  • Eligible applicants must present a certificate of finances, showing a minimum balance of 4,000 USD.
  • AU EGLS is solely based on academic merit and is renewable for up to 4 years.
  • Deadline for this year has expired.

Applicants of American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship must note that the scholarship program doesn’t include non-billable expenses worth 4,000 USD. These include health insurance, books, airline tickets, and other miscellaneous expenses.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for the financial aid is determined on the basis of financial need and several other factors like citizenship, master’s or doctoral degree and the student belonging to an underrepresented community.

An eligible applicant for American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship must

  • be an international student needing F-1 or J-1 US Student Visa.
  • submit proof of additional funds beyond the initial USD 4,000 provided.
  • apply for the Fall term (August) 2020 via regular decision cycle.
    • Early decision applicants will NOT be considered.
  • have a minimum GPA of 3.8 out of 4.0 in XI and XII.
  • have demonstrated commitment towards leadership, volunteerism, and community service.
  • fulfill at least one of the following English Proficiency Scores

Application Process

Listed below is the step by step procedure to apply for American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship:

  1. Complete the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship online application.
  2. Submission of a bank letter and the AU Certification of Finances (AU CFIS) form each, showing a minimum balance of 4,000 USD.
    • These could be uploaded in the Future Eagle Portal or sent via fax to +1-202-885-1025.
  3. Submission of English proficiency score results, preferably TOEFL or IELTS scores.
    • Scan and email it to admissionsdocuments@american.edu.
  4. Completion of the Common Application or Coalition Application form along with the supporting documents, mentioned in the checklist by AU EGLS.

Note: Applicants applying via program conducted by EducationUSA like USAP, CCC, Opportunity Grants, it is advisable to provide a letter by EducationUSA center’s adviser to confirm the candidacy. The letter could be sent in the PDF format to levinson@american.edu.


Selection Process

The selection process for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship is conducted by the university itself. AU EGL finalists and semifinalists will have to go through Skype Interviews and submit additional essay submissions.

Priority will be given to the applicants who will submit their AU EGLS form, Common/Coalition Application, and International admissions at AU before December 15.

Applicants must note that if they are not shortlisted for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship, they are still eligible for a partial merit scholarship.


Grant Details

American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship is given exclusively to one meritorious student who is capable of revamping the under-privileged and undeserving communities in their home country.

The best part about the grant is, it is awarded to the deserving candidates who provide evidence of their financial situation. The AU EGL scholarship is applicable for all the billable AU expenses including Full-tuition, Room and Board, for one international student who will be needing an F-1 student visa to study in the US.
