A student at IIT Kharagpur can study Physics even without attending classes or going to labs. I think the m experience in any department depends mainly on 3 factors
Your own motivation: You either get inspired or are naturally motivated. The former does not need much external pressure. This means you can function well even without good facilities or professors. However, those who lack such inspiration need constant motivation to depend on good professors to develop an interest in the course and perform well. Physics is a difficult subject and one cannot solely depend upon self-study. So physics at IIT Kharagpur is not for those who lack inherited motivation.
Professors: Sadly, IIT Kharagpur has only a few professors that make it into the category of experienced and learned. Most professors are good at research but lack teaching skills. If the second and third-year subjects are not taught by good professors, you will face quite a bit of a downfall in this path.
Department:
Any particular department can be evaluated on the basis of labs, workload, grading, placements, and scope for higher studies.
Peer group:
Having passionate people in your batch adds to the overall learning experience. The peer group in KGP comprises usually hostel friends or friends from societies or clubs.
If you are truly passionate about Physics, be it theoretical or practical, you should choose either IISER Pune or IISER Kolkata. IISER Kolkata is the best option for Physics, while IISER Pune is well-known for its overall academics and infrastructure. Here are the reasons why you should prefer IISER over IIT.
Based on the performance over the last few years, IISER Pune will be better than IISER Kolkata.
One of my friends studied Physics (Hons.) from Gargi College and according to her, it was an amazing experience.
Categories | Gargi College |
Course Fee | INR 24,000 |
Placement Percentage | 80% |
Highest CTC | 15 LPA |
Average CTC | 4 LPA |
Other than academics, Gargi provides ample opportunities to join various cultural societies to improve student’s skills. Gargi helps you grow academically and holistically.
The research scope in the physics department at IIT Madras is quite broad and in fact, it is one of the leading IITs in this aspect. Some of the areas of focus include
The department also has some experimental and theoretical research groups working on the most relevant topics in these areas and has collaborations with other institutions.
As a graduate student, you will be given tremendous opportunities in research work on a wide range of topics. You will be constantly guided by your professors and seniors.
IIT Madras is considered to be one of the superior research institutes in science and technology. This culture will witness advancement in the coming years owing to the Strategic Plan 2020 of the institute. All graduates can rest assured, as IIT Madras is the father of research and you will find ample opportunities here.
ARSD and Maitreyi, both are reputed colleges under Delhi University. You can choose either of these two institutes for pursuing a degree in Physics. Both have a decent faculty base and lab infrastructure.
However, comparably ARSD is better than Maitreyi for pursuing a degree in Science. According to IndiaToday 2021 ranking, ARSD was ranked 16 for Science.
The BSc course in Physics at MSU Baroda is at par with the top institutes like IISERs and IITs.
The infrastructure is the best in the whole of Gujarat state. The faculty for this course however is a bit lacking in comparison to other courses. Some are not skilled enough while some are not interested in teaching at all.
The laboratories are decked with decent equipments but during the First and Second years, they are almost of no use. The third year has a lot of lab sessions that should not be missed
The theoretical exams are pretty easy as most of the questions are based on what has been taught in the class.
MSU has 2 major libraries ( SSMT and SHMT) that have a wide range of books on almost every subject.
Research is mainly conducted in areas of condensed matter, Spectroscopy, X Ray diffraction and Nuclear Physics. Seminars and conferences are held throughout the year on campus.
My opinion is that MSU is not much of a good choice for a BSc in Physics, especially if you are coming from a state other than Gujarat.
IIT BHU Engineering Physics placements have been pretty good for the session of 2020-21. Here are the placement highlights.
Parameters | Salary Packages (in INR) |
Average CTC | 17 LPA |
Median CTC | 19 LPA |
Highest CTC | 28 LPA. |
Many students of Engineering Physics also opt for higher studies. If you are interested in pursuing research, this branch is ideal.
IIT Hyderabad is ranked 8th by NIRF for Engineering Physics, amongst the top engineering colleges in the country. It has one of the best technology incubators for electrical engineering students in the country for Fabless Chip Design in collaboration with top industry giants and universities of Japan.

Recognitions
The institute adopts a traditional teaching methodology keeping up with the modern advances in technology. Faculties try to inculcate a research driven approach amidst the students. IIT Hyderabad is a premier college for pursuing Engineering Physics and students must work diligently to excel in any field, considering ample opportunities provided by the college.
DTU is ranked at 36 amongst all engineering colleges in India by NIRF 2020. MAIT is ranked at 89 by the week for BTech.
The Engineering Physics program at DTU is related to applied physics and has electronics as a major subject and minor electives which include Nanoscience, Nuclear engineering, Photonics, space, and atmospheric science, etc. Whereas,EEE strictly focuses on electrical subjects and excludes minor electives.

Engineering Physics and EEE are two completely different branches of engineering. The former has more opportunities for higher studies and DTU offers great exposure for that. Many students went on to pursue MS in Ivy League Universities from the course. Whereas EEE has better placement. You should choose the course you are more interested in and the institute according to that.
