What should I chose between BITS Pilani Hyderabad ECE and IIT Kharagpur Manufacturing science and engineering?

This answer can be answered in 2 aspects; branch wise and Institute wise.

Branch-wise, ECE is way ahead of Manufacturing Science and Engineering and has a wider scope after graduation. ECE students are hired by both electronics and software companies. Moreover, ECE is a major stream whereas Manufacturing is just a sub-stream under Mechanical Engineering.

Specifically talking about colleges only, I would suggest you choose IIT KGP which has a stronger brand name and legacy than BITS Pilani Hyderabad. Its reputation is not just limited to India and has great scope outside India as well. It gets better and more companies than BITS during campus placements.

One major point of difference is the location of both institutes. Hyderabad has a much superior location than IIT Kharagpur thus offering better college life and exposure. IIT KGP is remotely located and lacks the necessary industry touch and exposure.

You have to travel long distances just to eat or do shopping. You will miss out on city life and the opportunities it has to offer. While the campus is great, you have to stay inside as the world outside is desolate. Spending 4 years without much exposure might limit your opportunities.

Hyderabad on the other hand has everything city life has to offer apart from being a major IT hub. This makes it possible to apply for campus jobs as well which is not possible in the case of IIT KGP.

In the end, it’s you who has to make a decision. Go where your heart is inclined the most be it ECE or Manufacturing at IIT or BITS. Just make sure to make a decision that will not make you regret it later.

Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar

IIT Kharagpur is one of the older establishments of IIT. The dual degree is a 5-year course with BTech in Manufacturing Science and Engineering and MTech in Industrial Engineering and Management. Manufacturing Science is similar to mechanical engineering but also has some differences.

Placement Details:

  • According to the placement statistics, 95% of students from the dual degrees got placement in 2019 at IIT Kharagpur. Over 50% of students of the program are recruited in the non-core sectors.
  • The job roles include business analytics, technical analytics, research analytics, consultants, and software developers.
  • Companies like Tata Steel, L&T, Reliance, Honeywell, Hindustan Unilever, Procter and Gamble, BPCL, Coal India Limited, IOCl and ISRO visited during the placement program.
  • The average salary offered was 15 lakhs per annum.

IIT Bhubaneswar is one of the new IITs. Although it does not have the same reputation as IIT Kharagpur, it offers decent infrastructure and facilities for M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering.

Placement Details:

  • According to the 2019 placement highlights the average CTC offered at IIT Bhubaneswar was around 11.4 LPA.
  • The companies that participated in the placement program were Adobe, Amazon, Accenture, HCL, HPCL, and IOCL.

It is difficult to choose which institute is better as the branches are different. Mechanical Engineering is a core subject, thus choosing it will give you several options in your career. Whereas, IIT Kharagpur is more reputed and will be a better option if you want to study and further research on your subject abroad. The institute has many collaborations with foreign universities like the University of Melbourne, Curtin University, University of Wollongong, University of Alberta, and the University of Auckland.
