I am a fresher engineer. Should I do an MBA from a college like PUMBA or NL Dalmia?

SD
Sumanta Dasgupta Posted On : June 24th, 2021

From your question, it seems as though you are trying to figure out two things, i.e.

  1. Whether to go for an MBA degree?
  2. If MBA, then what among NL Dalmia or PUMBA?

I would be answering both of your questions individually. As far as your first question is concerned, try and ask yourself why do you want to go for an MBA:

  • Are you genuinely interested in pursuing an MBA degree or are you taking inspiration from your friends?
  • Are you pursuing an MBA degree because your friends and relatives have compelled you?
  • Do you not have anything better to do?

If you think you can do justice to another 2 years of life, then go for it.

Assuming you have understood why you are going for an MBA degree, let me address your second question.

You should do some prior research by checking and comparing how the placement statistics of both the colleges look like. If you want to go for MBA Finance, I've heard good things about Dalmia from my friends.

My brother attended PUMBA and based on his experience, I will say it is a great management school. Here are some points about PUMBA.

  • Internship: Here you would have 2 internship opportunities for 5 months, unlike any other college. You can choose incubation projects too.
  • Fees: The affordable fee is one of the things that sets this B-School apart from others. For the General category, it is almost Rs. 65,000 for an entire year.
  • Exposure: For any extra or co-curricular activities, you will get a whole lot of exposure. Plus, it would be even better if you get to work for a particular cell- alumni, cultural or placement, etc.
  • Faculty: The faculty base is great.
  • Placement: There exist no 100% placement records, frankly. If you are capable, you would get a good package. A bonus would be a good academic background. Here are the recent placement highlights.

Average CTC

6.43 LPA

Highest CTC

16 LPA

No of recruiters

100+

Major recruiters

HDFC Bank, Infosys, Tata Capital, etc.

  • Timing: The schedule is not tight, therefore, you can consider picking up a hobby and perfecting it.

Honestly, there isn't anything bad that I can think of for PUMBA. You can definitely give this institute a shot.

What is the process for an MBA from PUMBA, for non-Maharashtrians?

SG
Sarita Gupta Posted On : June 23rd, 2021
MBA from Department of Management Sciences, University of Pune (2019)

MBA colleges in Maharashtra reserve a large portion of seats for the students of Maharashtra Domicile. Over the years the reserved category has reduced but to date, it is more than half of the total seats.

  • For the previous year, 75% of the seats were reserved for the students for Maharashtra domicile and the rest was for All India Category.
  • This in turns results in very high cut-offs in All India Category near about 98+ percentile.
  • For MBA in PUMBA you need to appear in any of the following exams conducted across the country - CAT, MAT, XAT, CMAT or MH-CET.

When the results are out you have to register on the DTE Maharashtra website to avail domicile benefit. Fill in the preferences and the colleges you want to get in.

Can someone give an honest review about MBA from Welingkar, Mumbai, and PUMBA? Keeping in mind that I have a below-average profile until now and had a year drop in my graduation.

PGDM from Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research (2017)

Having friends in both the institutes, I might be able to help you with the question. Welingkar, Mumbai, and PUMBA are two opposite colleges, and comparing them is the same as comparing the North and South directions.

  • Welingkar has a cut-off of 99 for MMS and in the course of PGDM, the cutoff is above 70 percentile which should be scored in CET.
  • If scored above 70 percentile, a person would be called for GD and PI.
  • On the other hand, PUMBA in CET has a quite good cut-off ranging from about 94-95 percentile.
  • The campus is quite good also as it offers the whole Pune University Campus to sit and have fun in.
  • Along with the cut-off and campus, It's also better in terms of ROI.

How much percentile is required for CAT in PUMBA, Pune?

MS
Moinak Sinha Posted On : August 10th, 2022
Studied Master of Business Administration Degrees at Department of Management Sciences, University of Pune

According to PUMBA cutoff trends, students from outside of Maharashtra need a CAT percentile of around 99+. The required cutoff varies each year depending on the competition and other factors. Try to score north of 99 percentile in CAT, to be safe. PUMBA accepts MAHCET scores too, you can attempt that as well.

How is life after doing MBA from PUMBA?

DS
Divya Shukla Posted On : June 28th, 2021
Studied at FTII Pune (2018)

Life gets quite boring after pursuing MBA from the Department of Management Sciences, Pune. One of my friends studied at the Department of Management Sciences, Pune, and I will state some facts about how graduating from PUMBA looks like.

After graduating from PUMBA you will miss all those days of fun that you have spent there. Late-night birthday parties, gossip with friends, you will surely gonna miss all those.

  • Once you step into the corporate world you will get no leisure time and work will be your first priority.
  • You cannot enjoy yourself at parties as you have a lot of workloads.
  • PUMBA students are well settled in their chosen sector after graduating.
  • You have to make your life by yourself and the institute cannot do much for you. It can guide you and prepare you, but ultimately it will depend on your capability.

Therefore, if you are thinking of joining the PUMBA, then go ahead with it. Life in college, as well as life after that, will be good.

How is life at PUMBA? I am planning to take admission at PUMBA, but how is the faculty? Do lectures happen on time? How's the overall grooming of the student personally?

SM
Sushmita Mondal Posted On : June 29th, 2021
MBA from Department of Management Sciences (PUMBA) (2019)

Life at PUMBA depends upon you. The MBA course is not rigorous or hectic like IIMs. The following are the highlights of the course -

  • Your basic schedule for an MBA includes lectures, assignments, and examinations. The remaining day is free for you. It depends on how you utilize that time.
  • The institute is student-driven. All the events, fests, and placements are completely organized by students.
  • There are six cells responsible for different activities on campus. These cells can hone the managerial, leadership, and organizing skills of the cell members.
  • The faculty of the institute is excellent. They have rich experience in industry and teaching. You can seek knowledge and guidance from them.

The best thing is to embrace the college you are studying at and have a sense of responsibility to pay back. It can be in the form of bagging the highest placement, winning competitions, keeping in touch as an alumnus, and others.

This psychology will help you grow more and do the best for college and yourself. You can use your time in PUMBA by investing in your overall development in the way of internships, part-time jobs, or courses.
