Studied English Language and Literature & Physics at University of Maryland, College Park (2015)

Which one is a “better” university depends on what you are studying and what you want to achieve out of the education. Syracuse is a private institute in New York while the University of Maryland is a public higher education institute in Maryland. Ranking wise too both are ranked #58 among the top US universities by US News. So finally it comes down to your preference of study. You should visit both the campuses, talk to their respective admission offices and understand the opportunities available to the graduates. If however, you live in the states of Maryland or DC area, you should definitely consider the University of Maryland as being a state university, you can save lots on your education bills.

University of Maryland has a very strong STEM program. Its engineering department which includes chemical engineering and fire protection engineering along with the traditional mathematics, physics and computer science departments are very well renowned. Their literature and criminal justice programs are also really very good. However, the professional courses offered by the university are just about average. This is where Syracuse University excels at.

If you want to study public relations, advertising, film making, broadcast and digital journalism, you should choose the Newhouse School of Communications and the School of Information Studies of Syracuse University. Similarly the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs is excellent for public affairs study while The Whitman School of Management and the law school are also quite reputed in their field of study within the university.
