Which IIM is better for a fresher, IIM Rohtak or IIM Raipur? Why?
IIM Rohtak is comparably better than IIM Raipur. It offers a unique learning experience through group studies, club activities, presentations, committees, etc.
- IIM Rohtak is ahead of the new IIMs as it has completed a decade and has better industry recognition.
- It is located near the industrial area of Delhi NCR. So, students get better industrial exposure, live project opportunities, and internship offers.
- The Industry Relations and Interactions Cell organizes regular guest lectures by reputed industry personalities to keep the students updated about current industry trends.
- It is one of the only four IIMs to have a CFA affiliation.
- The placement scenario of the institute is pretty good. Each year almost 100% of students get placed. IIM Rohtak placements 2022 concluded with an average CTC of INR 16 LPA.
The culture on campus is student-driven. Students are involved in managing curriculum to extracurricular activities under the guidance of management. So, you will learn to handle managerial tasks.
Which would be a better choice of B school between New IIMs (Ranchi, Raipur, etc.), MDI, IIFT Kolkata, IIT-B (SJMSOM) with finance as a specialization?
Among these colleges, IIFT Kolkata or MDI will be better for Finance. According to MDI Gurgaon placements 2022 record, BFSI, and E-Commerce sectors had placement rates of 22% and 13%. During 2021 placement drive, 55 students from MDI were placed in the Finance sector. The highest CTC offered in this sector was INR 21-23 LPA.
You can also consider IIFT Kolkata. It offers similar opportunities as IIFT Delhi, in the Finance sector. During IIFT Kolkata Summer placements 2021, the top recruiting sector was BFSI.
Which college should I choose: IIM Raipur or NMIMS Mumbai? (For Operations/Finance)
NMIMS Mumbai is the better option among these. It is especially good for Finance.
- Mumbai houses many top MNCs in the country. So, you will get excellent exposure.
- Diverse pool of recruiters visits the NMIMS placement drive each year. During the 2022 placement drive, students received an average CTC of around INR 23.07 LPA. While the highest CTC offered was INR 57.65 LPA. 32% of the placement offers were from the Finance domain.
- NMIMS brand name is well-reputed in the industry.

Tata Steel, HDFC Bank, IBM, Accenture, IBM, Airtel, etc. are among the top recruiters that took part in the placement drive.
IIM Raipur doesn’t inflate the placement report. Overall, it is a decent B-school and offers excellent academics.
Which one should I choose: IIM Rohtak or IIM Raipur?
All the new IIMs are currently in a similar position with one giving an edge to another in some or the other way. So you can join any. But if I was to choose one of the two i.eIIM Rohtak and IIM Raipur, I would have chosen IIM Rohtak. Some points that favor my choice are
- The major reason why many choose Rohtak is because of the locational advantage it offers. Owing to regional industry coordination and NCR location it's better than other new IIMs
- Among the new IIMs, it is the oldest. So the batch size is bigger and so is the alumni network.
- Almost all the new IIMs function from a temporary campus and don’t have their own new campus. Meanwhile, IIM Rohtak is functioning from the MDU campus which is better than most campuses and has world-class facilities.
- The institute specializes in Marketing and is a good choice for Marketing enthusiasts. Many good firms offer marketing roles.
Most of the people who are in a dilemma of choosing between these two IIMs already have offers from these. If you ask the alumni of both institutes which one is better, in 99% of cases they will claim that their institute is better. So it’s better to do individual research and make a choice based on your own inclinations and prospects.
How good is IIM Raipur?
When it comes to educational quality, it is important to note that professors' quality may be unsatisfactory due to politics and a high turnover rate. Furthermore, student evaluations at the end of a course are not taken into account by the school. Cheating is also common in quizzes, making whether you study or not irrelevant and allowing lower-performing students to score higher grades.
In terms of living conditions, the hostels provide separate rooms with attached bathrooms, but the college is located quite far from the city. The nearest sector is five kilometers away, and transportation costs can be prohibitively expensive. The food at the mess is of poor quality, and there are no other dining options. Furthermore, students are not permitted to keep electric kettles in their rooms, and fines for breaking this rule can be severe.
IIM Raipur has a strong record of placement, with 100% of students placed. In the 2022 placement drive, the highest CTC offered was INR 42.15 LPA, with an average CTC of INR 17.73 LPA and a median CTC of INR 16.95 LPA. The institute has also had a successful summer internship program, with the highest stipend being INR 3.5 Lakhs and an average stipend of INR 1.20 Lakhs. In the Times Annual B School Ranking Survey 2021, IIM Raipur was ranked second in India.
Has anyone regretted opting for IIM Ranchi, Trichy, or Raipur leaving their 12 LPA job in their first CAT attempt (just graduated) and not trying for a better IIM the next year?
When considering whether to attend a new or "baby" Indian Institute of Management (IIM) or a more established one, there are two key issues to consider.
Firstly, it is possible to graduate from a new IIM and secure a job that pays significantly more than your current 12 LPA job but it will depend on your performance in business school, and the better-established IIMs will have a greater probability of making this happen. For example, if you attend IIM Trichy or IIM Ranchi, your chances of securing a higher-paying job will be higher.
Secondly, and more importantly, the question is whether you should join a new IIM in your first attempt if you are already holding a 12 LPA job. It is recommended to take the Common Admission Test (CAT) again and try to get into a better college, preferably one of the top 6 IIMs or other reputable institutions such as FMS, SP Jain, or MDI.
This will provide a greater opportunity to secure a higher-paying job in the future. While it is true that a new IIM may offer good opportunities and placements, the chances of getting a better placement are higher in more established institutes, it is better to aim for these institutes on the first attempt.
I had got a call from IIM Raipur and I didn't join. Now my job is frustrating and I'm getting depressed for missing out on the opportunity and can't concentrate for this year's CAT. What should I do?
I am sure my answer will motivate you for the best. Trust me not joining IIM Raipur was one of the best decisions you took. That B Schools is a substandard educational institution neither good for learning nor staying and making memories. People who join IIM Raipur are the ones who have literally no other option.
- The faculty is poorly experienced and the classroom learning is not even mediocre.
- There is no extracurricular activity culture at all. No events are conducted to promote cultures and no festivals are celebrated
- The hostel facilities are the worst here. During peak summers, the cooling system is switched off to cut down on expenses
- The CTC mentioned in the placement reports is inflated and highly misleading
All these points clearly say that joining IIM Raipur would have been a grave mistake. So I suggest you try to excel in your current job and then slowly look for a better job or MBA opportunity.
How good is IIM Raipur, and what is the position amongst the six new IIMs and Shillong?
Before I compare IIM Raipur with the 6 new IIMs, let me clarify one thing. IIM Shillong belongs to a whole different league so IIM Raipur can be compared to the new IIMs only.

- IIM Shillong: It lies at a different level as it is oldest among the new IIMs and is almost considered among the older IIMs. The placement figures are a testament to the fact.
- IIM Ranchi: Next in line comes IIM Ranchi which functions under the mentorship of IIM Calcutta. Its placement opportunities are much better than new IIMs.
- IIM Trichy: Another fast growing IIM is IIM Trichy.
- IIM Raipur/Udaipur: It is only after Trichy that Raipur is placed. Being situated in the capital city of Chattisgarh, Raipur has a location advantage over Kashipur and Rohtak. The faculty is also top notch and the airports provide connectivity to various parts of the country.
- IIM Rohtak/Kashipur: Both these IIMs are at the same level. Kashipur faced a slight location disadvantage, decreasing the changes of guest lectures and Industry and Business Leader interactions. Rohtak has a location advantage of being situated near to the capital but its placements are the worst of all the 6 IIMs.
So one should choose Raipur out of Kashipur/ Raipur/ Udaipur.
