IISc Bengaluru’s BS Program is still in its infancy but has great scope for development in the near future. In fact, I consider this program even better than the Engineering Physics offered at IIT Delhi. A few strong reasons support my stance on the same area:
Despite being a new course, I will highly recommend you to go for it owing to the tremendous scope of development it has.
While the Aerospace department of IIT Kharagpur is indeed well developed, IISc is still the best option for Aerospace in India. It has multiple collaborations with reputed Aircraft Manufacturing companies like Boeing and Airbus offering you the necessary exposure that might not be possible at IIT KGP. You can get an insight into the working of these companies and learn things quickly.
You can even apply to the foreign branches of these companies and get a good job. IISc is well known for its enthusiastic research-oriented approach and learned faculty that will help you grow as a person.
Being a knowledgeable person does necessarily mean you have to secure full marks. Knowing the right set of skills and implementing them is a must to be one of the top students.
That being said, to achieve great things you cannot expect your journey to be a cakewalk. The workload at IISc is indeed much more than IIT Kharagpur. You will face continuous challenges as you stay in the dynamic research environment which will eventually become a thrilling experience. Going for IISc will definitely guarantee you a good career ahead.
Both are excellent institutions, but the experience will differ between the two. Whereas IISc is much larger and has a more vibrant student community, the smaller batches in JNCASR allow for more attention and a better chance of getting into at least one of their preferred labs.
IISC is smack dab in the middle of a commercial area (well, actually, the commercial areas grew around IISc, but let's not get into that). JNCASR is less centrally located and more of a sleepy campus. It's a completely different story after the second year when the pressure is intense and lab work can be extremely demanding.
There are no holidays for students (not even Sundays or national holidays like the 15th of August or the 26th of January, but there is a flag hoisting event so you get off work for at least an hour) and most P.I.s do not allow paid leave of more than two weeks per year. This is not to say that there isn't any fun on campus. Most of the rules governing on-campus life are lax, and the guards and staff are laid-back and don't make a fuss when asked to overlook a few things.
IISc and IITM both offer good placements opportunities for M.Tech ECE. Same core companies visit the campuses, especially for ECE branches of Micro-Electronics and Electronics Systems Engineering.
Due to the small batch size, competition is much less at IISc. Some of the major recruiters were Texas Instruments, Cisco, Analog Devices, etc. The highlights of IISc M.Tech ECE placements report an average CTC of INR 15 LPA.
Dring the 2021 placement drive of IITM, M.Tech students received an average CTC of INR 16.84 LPA.
Life after graduating from IISc Bangalore depends on your branch. If you are interested in pursuing research, life can be good. Most students graduating from IISc choose research-oriented careers. Many join top universities such as Stanford, UCLA, UTA, ETH, and Harvard for higher education. Some also select academic careers as professors or teachers. Few IISc graduates also join corporate houses.
IISc offers excellent research opportunities for Chemical Engineering. It is well-known for multidisciplinary research in the field. So, if you aspire to be in a research-oriented career, then IISc will be the right option.
But if you want a job with good pay, after completing the course, then ICT Mumbai is better. Around 70% of students get placed each from the branch, each year. According to the recent highlights of ICT Mumbai, the average CTC offered for Chemical Engineering is around INR 6-7 LPA.
IISc Bangalore cutoff 2021 for GATE was 680 for M.Tech CSE program. Different IITs have different GATE cutoffs for their CS Major. Usually, the required cutoff stays with the rank band of 700-750. In 2021, the required GATE cutoff for CS at IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur were 816 and 776 respectively.
It actually depends on your degree. For bachelor's courses, IIT Bombay is a better choice. IISc started delivering UG courses recently. But for PG courses like M.Tech or Ph.D. IISc is definitely the better option.
B.Tech is the most valued course at IIT Bombay. It gives the UG student a sense of superiority. While each department of IISc has a limited number of PG and Ph.D. students. The building and resources are completely separate for UG and PG students.
The student-professor ratio of IISc is around 7-8 students per professor. While it is around 25-30 students per professor at IIT Bombay.
IISc MTech branches have a better placement record as well. Good placement opportunities, multidisciplinary approach, research focus, are some of the perks of joining IISc.
IISC Bangalore has been consistent enough in delivering world class researchers as well as top notch employees for the private sector running the world from cubicles.
The major companies visiting the campus for recruitment are Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Morgan, Stanley, Samsung, Apple, Oracle, JP Morgan, Flipkart, Myntra, and many more. Mass recruitment happened for the CS department.
As per past 3-4 years records the major Job profile offered were: Research Engineer, Software Engineer, and Data Science Analyst.
The table given below shows the salary range offered to the students placed in reputed companies:
CTC |
Range |
Highest CTC |
35-40 Lacs |
Lowest CTC |
10-15 Lacs |
Average and median CTC |
20-25 Lacs |
For the 2018 batch, the Highest CTC offered was 38.10 LPA, lowest stood for 10 LPA, Average 22.7 LPA and Median 22 LPA. Though Median is the most promising way to get exact information of what one student exactly gets as CTC. Almost all students got placed in their preferred company as well as their area of interest.
IITs are more reputed in US universities. The reason is quite simple. Even though things are changing, engineering still remains the career choice for most students. IITs also have a huge alumni base.
However, in the research sector, IISc is a widely recognized name. Researchers and professors of reputed universities are well aware that IISc is a prestigious research university in India.
