Why should someone choose IIT Delhi over IIT Mumbai for CSE? Except his/her AIR.?
There are two sides to every coin. Similarly, there are many reasons why one must choose IIT Delhi over IIT Mumbai and vice versa. To make it further understandable, I have listed some common pros and cons of IIT Delhi
Pros
- You are in proximity to the capital city
- It’s easy to prepare for some other exams also apart from Engineering like IAS
- Hauz Khas village in itself is an absolute treat to the eyes
- Being in Delhi makes it possible to go for road trips to Jaipur, Chandigarh, Lansdown, Rishikesh, Dehradun, Agra, etc.
- The Delhi Metro makes commuting quiet easy
- There are many places to explore and hang out with your friends in the vicinity of the campus.
Cons
- CS department of IIT Bombay is way better than IIT Delhi offering a plethora of diverse courses.
- The campus of IIT Bombay has more natural landscape and greenery in comparison to IIT Delhi. This enhances the climate and overall ambiance inside the campus
- Unlike IIT Delhi, the hostel facilities are much better at IIT Bombay while Delhi hostels are overly crowded.
- Delhi faces extreme climatic conditions whereas the weather of IIT Bombay somehow remains the same throughout the year.

I got CSE at IIT Delhi. Can I get a single room in the first year?
Do you think getting admission to the most coveted branch will also give access to the most coveted housing facilities? Well, you are wrong, inside IIT your rank has no value. You will be treated like any other student with equal amenities at your disposal.
At IIT Delhi, every student is allotted a room randomly without any discrimination. First-year students usually get 2-seater or 3-seater rooms depending on the hostel they are assigned to.
The single rooms you were asking for are usually allotted in the last year but some lucky students get a single room from the 3rd year in a new hostel like Girnar or Udaigiri. But regardless, your hostel will become your new home. Irrespective of the kind of rooms you are allotted, you get adapted to them and make splendid memories and new friends.
Which IIT is better, IIT Delhi or IIT Kanpur?
Both IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur are well-respected institutions in the field of engineering and technology. They are both ranked among the top engineering colleges in India, and they have a reputation for producing successful graduates. However, while choosing between the two you can consider the following aspects
- Ranking: According to NIRF rankings, IIT Delhi stands in the second position while IIT Kanpur is in fourth. So IIT Delhi enjoys a better reputation and preference rate than IIT Kanpur mainly because of its location.
- Course: IIT Kanpur offers an abundance of courses to choose from. It has 8 B.Tech programs; 13 M.Tech programs; several dual degrees; B.Sc and M.Sc; Ph.D. programs and M.Des. (Master of Design). The courses are well-structured with a better grading system than IIT Delhi and thus in this aspect, IIT Kanpur is surely the winner.

4. Alumni network: Both IIT Delhi and Kanpur have equally good alumni like N. R. Narayana Murthy and Manindra Agrawal from IIT Kanpur and Sanjay, Binny Bansal, and Chetan Bhagat from IIT Delhi.

IoE: One interesting aspect that sets IIT Delhi apart from IIT Kanpur is its Institute of Eminence (IoE) Status, under which the Institute can make its own decisions regarding course structure, infrastructure, fees, etc. This is unique and only IIT Bombay and Delhi are the IITs that enjoy this status as of now.
Both the IITs are unique in their way with their strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, the ‘better institute’ is more of a personal choice and depends on many factors. If I were in your place, I would have certainly taken IIT Delhi mainly because of its prime location.
How is the hostel life of IIT Delhi?
The hostel life of IIT Delhi is one filled with freedom and fun. The hostel never sleeps with the midnight canteen running till 3 in the morning. People spend their time in hostels differently depending on their nature
- Some are holed up in their rooms for entire days
- Some form a group of studious people always discussing nothing but studies
- Some can be seen playing football, partying, and enjoying their time to the fullest
- Some are addicted to games and spend their nights' gaming
The quality of hostel life depends on who you are and varies dramatically from person to person.
I got a CS in IIT Delhi and an MBBS in Haldwani Medical College. Which should I choose?
This is a very common debate sparked among aspirants who aren't sure of which field to enter that will shape their career in the best possible way. While the final decision can be taken by the individual itself, a few basic points of comparison below might help you make a more informed decision.
- Engineering covers a short duration of 4 years while Medical requires a long commitment of 6-7 years.
- Engineering is no doubt easier than medicine and has more practical concepts while medical studies require mugging up of thick books
- The job opportunities in Engineering are highly competitive due to the large supply whereas medical professionals are in high demand due to short supply
- Job stability is higher for medical professionals than engineers
- The working environment of medical professionals is very challenging and unpredictable whereas engineers have a relatively smooth working environment.
- Very few and demanding higher study options are available in the medical field whereas engineering has a lot of higher study options like master's, Ph.D., and MBA
- Engineers usually work under other higher authorities while medical professionals set up their private practices quite early.
- There are more options for engineers to settle abroad than Medical professionals.
- As an engineer, you keep learning and upgrading your skills throughout your life while doctors learn once and spend the rest of their life practicing what they have learned.
Both fields offer contrasting opportunities and lifestyles and ultimately you need to choose the one that inclines with the expectations of your future.
How was your first day at IIT Delhi?
Every IITian’s first day is a memory that stays with them forever, and is permanently ingrained, and so was my friend's first day at IIT Delhi.
At around 11 in the morning, students were escorted to Dogra Hall, wherein an orientation session was conducted by the IIT Delhi director who briefed us about the institute administration and clarified basic doubts. The students were impressed by his speech and the two points that resonated the most with my friend were
- Students of IIT Delhi should target job creation and not job seeking.
- Despite a well-structured academic curriculum and research culture, why hasn’t IIT Delhi still been able to make it into the hundred top institutes globally?
The orientation was followed by a tea session of 15 minutes at the LHC lobby. Students were escorted to department-wise orientation sessions that were addressed by the respective departmental heads. Once the orientation sessions concluded, students were asked to go back to the hostels, their new home for 4 years.
A few formalities have to be dealt with related to the hostel BSW volunteers and how secretaries will always be at your disposal assisting you in every possible way. After lunch, she interacted with a few of her wingmates.
The first day at IIT Delhi will surely leave a long-lasting impression on you and will be filled with exciting memories and discoveries.
Is IIT Bombay better than IIT Delhi?
Here are some of the reasons why IIT Bombay is better than IIT Delhi:
- IIT Bombay has a better campus and is located in a better area, with Powai being a class apart.
- IIT Bombay has a better reputation for research, with more patents and papers compared to IIT Delhi.
- IIT Bombay has a better "Employer Reputation" as per QS, with better placement opportunities compared to IIT Delhi.
- IIT Bombay has no restrictions of any sort, such as dress code, internet restrictions, or LAN bans.
- IIT Bombay has a better climate compared to IIT Delhi.
- IIT Bombay has a financial capital advantage, which provides better opportunities in non-core sectors.
- IIT Bombay has a few BS programs, such as BS Economics/Mathematics/Chemistry, which are not available at IIT Delhi.
- IIT Delhi has redundant BTech programs, such as BTech Textile and BTech BioTech, which lead to non-core jobs and corporate life.
- IIT Bombay attracts famous personalities more often, providing exposure to students.
- IIT Bombay has better hostels for its freshers compared to IIT Delhi.
Although interdisciplinary research might be slightly more in IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay is growing at a tremendous rate and beating IIT Delhi and IISc in the QS rankings. With proper funding and organization, both institutes have the potential to rub shoulders with the best in the world.
Which is better, IIT Roorkee CS or IIT Delhi mathematics and computing (4 years)?
Both programs are equally good in their respective fields and so are the institutions offering the programs. It’s important to consider what you expect from the program and what you plan to achieve after graduation to make the right choice.
My sister was in a similar dilemma as yours and eventually, she opted for MCA from IIT Delhi.This program has many courses similar to CS but the only problem is, the pedagogy adopted has a more theoretical approach than practical. Moreover, at some point, you will start questioning the parity of the faculty and will have to resort to self-study.
But here is the bright side, most companies coming for CS placements consider MCA students too, and offer decent roles.
Although I am not well aware of the situation in Roorkee, I can guarantee a true coding lover will prefer CS to MCA any day.
What is the situation of mechanical engineering placements in IIT Delhi?
Mechanical Engineering is one of the most coveted branches of IIT Delhi and rightly so. The Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Delhi, is ranked 64th in the world QS Rankings 2022. How much marks are needed for OBC category in JEE (Advance) to get CSE in IIT Delhi?
Never target a fixed score if you are planning to clear JEE because the level of difficulty of the exam varies every year. The closing rank of an OBC candidate is 340 for the CSE branch at IIT Delhi. So, on a rough estimate, a score of around 230 might get you into CSE as an OBC student. However, you wouldn’t limit your capabilities to your branch but give your best.
