Very few IITs in India offer Geology and all of them follow the same curriculum. The faculties at IIT Bhubaneswar is well qualified and experienced. Given below are a few advantages of choosing geology at IIT Bhubaneswar:-

• One of the parts of the IIT Bhubaneswar campus is close to Chilka lake, which is used for ocean and navel geology based courses, it is probably the only IIT in the country with such practical facilities available.
• Being one of the most culturally effervescent cities in the country and having a tropical savanna climate, Bhubaneswar is the most suitable for the field of climate and ocean research.
• There are a large number of elective courses of the geology department that are available in IIT Bhubaneswar with a few notable ones being Glacial Geoscience, Modelling and Stimulation, and many others. There are about 11 elective courses in MSc Geology each having 3 contact hours and 3 credits and divided between semesters(I and II) and (III and IV). The first two semesters have courses like environmental earth sciences and the 3rd and 4th semesters have courses like organic geochemistry.

Rural Immersion Projects are designed to give an exposure to students about the environment and problems of the rural landscape and how modern technology and management concepts can be applied to improvise the rural society’s living condition. Students work on water conservation and storage, irrigation channels optimization, farm equipment, organic fertilizers, waste recycling, composting, solar power generation and similar applications for the upliftment of rural landscape. There is an emphasis on Social Immersion Activities that reinforce a students’ curricular learning with real-life learning by engaging with the society under different situations. Intense societal engagement enables a student to have a broader perspective of the problems faced by different sections of the society and how his learning can be applied to develop innovative solutions that have a wider impact. MSc in cognitive science pertains to consciousness which is considered as a product of the activity of the brain which is a misconception. You get your degree awarded by employing methods that are scientifically accepted.

The placement for MSc.-PhD in Atmosphere and Sciences at IIT Bhubaneswar is not that impressive. Although the overall placement at this IIT is quite decent and the placement rate is around 90% with an average CTC of 11.4 LPA. But the placement statistics for the M.Sc courses are not good. Only a few teaching institutes visit the campus during the placement drive recruiting students mainly from courses like Mathematics and Physics, etc.

The department of Atmosphere and Sciences at IIT Bhubaneswar is still developing and there is a shortage of faculty members in this department but there are visiting faculties from the different institutes.

To pursue a joint MSc.-Ph.D. degree in atmospheric sciences from IIT Bhubaneswar a student is required to have at least 60% in aggregate in his or her undergraduate degree in a relevant stream from a recognized university. A joint MSc.- Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences is not a very popular subject among the students and the department is still developing. The School of Earth, Ocean, and Climate Sciences at IIT Bhubaneswar have well-experienced faculty members. It also invites professors from other premier institutes like the University of Ontario and University of Massachusetts.

This subject is mainly research-oriented. Topics like Meteorology, Aerosol Properties, and impacts, Urban Heat Island Effects, etc. are studied under the subject of Atmospheric Sciences. Regarding placements, Atmospheric Sciences might not provide you with opportunities from private sectors, but the Government, Ministry of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences recruit students for various Scientific posts and Contractual posts. For example, the National Centre for Antarctic Ocean and Research (NCAOR) recruits students of atmospheric sciences. Students also opt for higher education.

Vidyasagar University is the pioneer university that introduced the M.Sc degree in Remote Sensing and GIS. A number of scientists who have retired from government organizations visit the department often.

The faculty involved in teaching the topics is arguably some of the best in West Bengal. The same can be said about the research activities conducted in the university. 

The placement scene is also admirable as the students get employed as soon as they complete the course. You can get a job role in research organizations such as NATMO, DST, organizations pertaining to carrying out space research, private companies such as Cyberswift, Rolta, ESRI, etc. 

If you are interested in technology and computer software then make sure you go for remote sensing. It would do you good if you have some basic knowledge of Physics and Mathematics you have done in your class 12 board exams. You can brush them up while pursuing the course.
