CUSAT is a university that had colleges under it in the past. Now it only has colleges or schools to be exact. Which are under the main university campus.

Following are the various schools affiliated with CUSAT University.

  • SOE: It stands for School of Engineering and deals with UG engineering courses.
  • Old SOE: It deals with Grad and Ph.D. courses. It also comprises various departments for MCA.
  • SLS: It stands for School of Legal Studies and deals with the law courses.
  • SMS: It stands for School of Management Studies and deals with business-related courses.
  • Kunjali Marakkar School of Marine Engineering: It deals with marine engineering courses.

The above-mentioned schools constitute the main campus. This is not the entire CUSAT, there is another campus for the university.

Lakeside Campus:

  • The Lakeside campus is around 12 km from the main campus. It is set in Cochin city on the estuarine waterfront.
  • It consists of the School of Ocean Science and Technology, School of Industrial Fisheries, Department of Atmospheric Sciences, Department of Chemical Oceanography, Department of Marine Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry, Department of Marine Geology and Geophysics, and Department of Physical Oceanography.
  • The School of Marine Sciences has a library that is regarded as one of the largest marine science libraries in Asia and a research vessel for coastal water studies.
  • The school has academic interactions with other universities and research institutes in India and abroad.

Apart from this, there is also CUCEK in Kuttanad, also known as the Pulincunnoo campus. So, if you get selected into civil engineering, then you will be studying in SOE which is inside the main campus.

Is CUSAT worth it for a Bihari student?

SR

The worth of a college does not depend on which state you belong to. It's up to you to make your time at the college worthwhile.

No matter which college or university you are in, they all have almost the same structure of syllabus and you have to study by yourself. If you do not have many options for college, you can choose an institute with a decent rank and low course fee.

Let’s take a look at some of the parameters to study in CUSAT.

Pros:

  • CUSAT is not that costly if compared to other colleges.
  • Since the institute is in Cochin, you can learn a different language.
  • CUSAT offers several other departments like Foreign Language, Hindi, Economics, Legal Studies, social science, and Management. These departments offer short courses. If you want you can learn new skills from such courses and participate in departmental events.
  • The living cost in Kerala is lower than in many states of India. There is also less distraction as compared to cities like Delhi and Bangalore.
  • There is an Incubation center that promotes Entrepreneurs.
  • You can earn while studying. There are many start-ups, also you can give tuitions. You won’t have to ask for money from your parents. Many of my friends did the same.
  • You can go on trips and participate in games in your spare time.

Cons:

  • Because of the different culture and language, sometimes you may feel alienated from others.
  • According to student reviews, sometimes the professors can be biased.
  • The placement of the college is average.
  • If you neglect studies, you have to go through rough times dealing with arrears and drops.
  • You won’t be able to go home easily on vacations as it is too expensive.
  • It is not a student-friendly college.

So ultimately, it all rolls down to how you use the opportunity. No matter which college you go in, if you want to learn new things and stay proactive, you can surely make the best of your days at the college. So, work hard and try to score well.

Since you are studying in the CUSAT, what are the best experiences you have in the CUSAT?

SK

Studied at Cochin University of Science and Technology

My brother studied there and he shared his experiences in Kuttanad Campus (2nd campus) Firstly, he used to buy drinking water. He was in his second year and the monsoon was at its peak. All the roadways to the island (Pulincunno) were blocked hence there was no water supply at all. Secondly, The strong coffee they provided is much better than the tea. And Lastly, the local KSRTC buses won’t wait even for a second if they’re late. He and his two other friends loved to take a ride to Changanassery, via the village route.

It was indeed a scenic route. They liked the route so much that if they were nearby a bus stand and coincidently a bus drove past, they used to run and catch it. They did this more than a dozen times, that too in their first year.

How are hostels at CUSAT?

IJ
Ishan Juneja Posted On : March 17th, 2022
B.Tech from Cochin University Of Science and Technology (2017)

CUSAT hostel fee is pretty minimal. You need to pay around INR 300/month

Although the fees for CUSAT hostel are nominal, the quality of living can’t be compared to other government colleges like NITs and IITs. Washrooms and other facilities aren’t at optimum standard. But if you compare it with the amount then the facilities are sufficient.

The hostels don’t have wi-fi facilities, so you will have to depend on local ISP. Also, there is no guarantee that you will get a hostel room in the 1st year itself. Many freshers have faced this and got hostel rooms, generally in 3rd or 4th year.

When will CUSAT Kochi be converted into an IIEST? It will be a boon for CUSAT.

SK
Sakshi Kumari Posted On : February 11th, 2021
M.Tech Thermal Engineering, Cochin University Of Science and Technology (2018)

There are several rumors about CUSAT being an IIEST in the future, having theories both supporting and opposing the statement. But, it is expected that CUSAT will never be IIEST. Some reasons opposing the statement are listed below.

  • There are several political forces involved in admission to the institute. If it becomes IIEST in the future, the admission procedure will entirely change, considered JEE Mains as the only form of admission for B.Tech students. So, local reservation criteria and other sorts would get neglected by this, and the level of competition would rise drastically.
  • Kerala is a small state and three national-level institutes like IIT, NIT, and IIEST in such a small region is not expected to be established.
  • The central government has proposed three colleges for becoming IIEST- Shibpur BESU, Anna University, and CUSAT. Out of the three, only Shibpur has accepted the proposal and is now IIEST. The rest two have put the request in their pending list. This makes it almost impossible to transform.

Considering the above factors, it can be concluded that CUSAT is not going to be an IIEST in the near future. The talk of its conversion has been going on for a long, especially during the time of admission and entrances, but it’s still unprocessed and unexpected.

The abstract from CUSAT AQAR (Annual Quality Assurance Report, page 61) says, “Being a state-funded University we have got used to receiving the full financial support from the State Government for salary and both the State and Central Government for infrastructural creation under the plan.”

So yes, Cochin University of Science and Technology is not a Central University but a Public university.

CUSAT is formed and controlled by the state itself. It does get many central funds for the development of infrastructure and some programs. But, basically, CUSAT is Kerala State funded.
