How is the classroom learning at KJ Somaiya (SIMSR)?

AG
Anmol Gira Posted On : December 26th, 2022
PGDM in Post Graduate Diploma in Management, K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research (SIMSR) (Graduated 2020)

The quality of classes here is so good that if you attend all the classes you will have to do minimal self study. Every concept literally settles in very well. Students who don’t attend the classes regularly really miss out on an opportunity to learn the best by the best.

I will describe the classroom learning at KJ Somaiya further through the following 4 factors:

  • Infrastructure: No matter how good the teachers are, one needs a proper ambiance to maintain full concentration. The classes at KJ Somaiya are fully air conditioned with comfortable seats. Other facilities include mikes, AV systems and boards.
  • Faculty: Most of the faculties are PhD with corporate experience. They know what they are teaching and are extremely supportive.
  • Study Material: You get new course books from the college and additional soft or hard copy notes from the professors as well. The library is also massive and has elaborate study material.
  • Methodology: The professors don’t just teach concepts they also teach how to implement them. To make this happen, case studies from HBR, newspaper cutouts and research journals are discussed in class. Some professors even conduct open book exams.

I hope I haven’t left any doubt uncleared regarding the classroom learning at KJ Somaiya.

Do I need to separately fill KJ Somaiya's form if I'm targeting it through the MAHCET and CMAT?

SG

There are two courses available in management studies

  1. PGDM (fully autonomous)
  2. MMS (autonomous affiliated to Mumbai university)

The PGDM course requires a separate form to be filled out if you are applying through CAT/CMAT/XAT or other All India Entrance exams. PGDM course doesn't have any kind of reservation criteria but you need only an All India Level Entrance exam score to apply.

The MMS course does not require you to fill out a separate form for applying through MHT-CET/CMAT/CAT because they are under DTE. One thing that you need to know is that this course is a Gujarati linguistic minority course where

  • 51% of seats are reserved for Gujarati Speaking students
  • 49 % don't have any caste-based quota,
  • Out of the total intake in MMS 15% is reserved for All India Entrance exams like CAT, XAT, etc.

Btech in Mechanical Engineering, K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering (Graduated 2018)

krunalI don’t think judging a college solely on the basis of placements is justified. Yet I have tabulated the placement statistics below to give an overall comparison.

Particulars

TAPMI

KJ Somya

Average CTC

INR 12.6 LPA

INR 10.98 LPA

Highest CTC

INR 32.2 LPA

INR 26.50 LPA

Number of Companies

100+

201

Placement Percentage

100%

99%

Other factors you can consider to decide which is better are

Location: Location-wise K J Somaya has an upper hand as it is in Mumbai, the financial hub of India. TAPMI is situated in Manipal, The student hub.

Campus: TAPMI has a much better and more beautiful campus and infrastructure than KJ Somaiya.

Accreditation: TAPMI has an upper hand as it has coveted AACSB accreditation and is among the first institutes in India to get so.

So make a choice not just on the basis of placements but also consider other important factors.

Is it worth applying to KJ Somaiya?

NM
Neha Mishra Posted On : December 26th, 2022
Studies Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery Degrees (Expected 2026)

Whether it’s worth applying to KJ Somaiya depends on what you want to do after it. Still, I will give you a general picture of the scenario here as my brothers studied here

Recognition: The college has recently become autonomous so an MS would not be a good option from here. It is yet to receive recognition from foreign universities.

Placements: The placements here are average. IT placements are the best here. Apart from these, Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering has also seen a surge in placement figures. Mechanical engineering students usually receive a package ranging from 3-5 LPA.

Faculty: The mechanical engineering faculty here is exceptionally good and supportive.

Infrastructure: The campus is huge with many amenities.

Exposure: The councils, workshops, and internships offer great exposure leading to overall profile development.

So yes it is worth applying to KJ Somaiya

Which is better as per placements and quality of education: GIM, SIIB, Fore IB, or KJ Somaiya?

KJ
Kiran Jatolia Posted On : December 26th, 2022
B. Tech in Electronics Engineering (courses), Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (Graduated 2017)

Although all the B Schools you mentioned are very good, the one I would personally recommend is FORE. Some points that favor my recommendation are

  • Location-based crowd: All the other colleges you mentioned have students mainly from Mumbai. But FORE located in New Delhi, the heart of the country has students from all over India.
  • Placement: Here’s a tabular comparison of the average and highest CTC of the colleges.

College

Average Package

Highest package

GIM

INR 12.1 LPA

INR 30.2 LPA

FORE

INR 14.04 LPA

INR 41 LPA

KJ Somaiya

INR 10.98 LPA

INR 26.50 LPA

SIBM Bangalore

INR 10.60 LPA

INR 32 LPA

  • Fees:

GIM: ?18,31,200

FORE: Rs.16,98,000

KJ Somaiya: ?9.59 Lakhs (one year)

SIBM: INR 3.53 L - 16.62 L(for 2-3 years)

FORE offers industry oriented certifications and International Immersion Program. So looking at the overall picture we can say all 4 colleges give each other tough competition but FORE takes the lead.

KA
Karan Agarwal Posted On : December 26th, 2022
BFM in Commerce, K J Somaiya College of Arts and Commerce (Graduated 2015)

You will get a call from KJ Somaiya based on the cutoff of last year. The K J Somaiya Mumbai cut-offs for 2 years flagship regular MBA Admission 2022 are as follows

Entrance Exam

Expected Cutoff

CAT 2021

83-85 Percentile

XAT 2022

70-73 Percentile

GMAT

500-650 Score

CMAT 2022

98 Percentile

NMAT 2021

225-230 Score

The admissions at KJ Somaiya are offered on the basis of the above entrance exam scores followed by a personal interview. For the institute’s MBA admission shortlist process, the weightage given to the following parameters is

More than figures, the deciding factors for your choice of college should be your interest, strengths, area of specialization and most importantly why you are pursuing an MBA.

My friend is a pass out of SIMS. According to her, some features of SIMS are

  • the majority of the batch gets placed well in the 1st half of the academic year itself.
  • use of technological advancements in our day-to-day classroom life
  • qualified and knowledgeable faculty
  • Diverse crowd
  • Strong alumni base

All these features make SIMR one of the best B Schools of India.
