UGC Approves Four More Deemed Universities to Offer Online Degree Programs


New Delhi: UGC's Distance Education Bureau has recently released an additional list of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) that are permitted to offer online courses without prior approval from the commission. 

As per UGC, the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) that are included in the list can offer online programs mentioned by the commission from January 2022 onwards. The complete list of selected institutes and courses is available on the official website of UGC at ugc.ac.in.

While talking about the addition of institutes to the list, Higher Education Regulator said in an official release, "This is in addition to already uploaded lists of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) entitled to start full-fledged online programs without prior approval of the UGC".

"The institutes will be able to offer courses as per provisions stipulated under regulations 3(B)(a) of the University Grants Commission (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020 and its amendment from academic," release further added.

The list of approved Higher Education Institutions has been released by the commission on the basis of applications received for online program approval. The courses which can be offered by the HEIs are selected by the recommendation from the respective Regulatory Authority.

Following the regulations of UGC to offer online courses, universities and institutes shall not offer online programs under any franchise arrangement. The institute should have total ownership of the programs. 

Additionally, HELs approved by UGC can only offer online courses till they meet the requirements of NAAC or NIRF ranking as per Regulations 3(B)(a) of the UGC ODL. Learners who are enrolled in an online program shall be allowed to complete it in the laid down manner.

Earlier, on December 09, 2021, University Grants Commission, UGC approved two universities to offer online programs from November 2021 session. The universities included in the list were MRIIRS, Faridabad, and GLA University, Mathura.

As per the notice released in December 2021, “The last date for admission shall be as notified by the Commission for each academic session and HEIs shall upload the admission details within fifteen days thereafter".

"For the academic session, November 2021, the last date of admission is December 15, 2021, therefore students must submit their applications before the given deadline" notice further reads.

With this initiative of the commission, the number of universities that can offer online programs in times of ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has increased significantly. As of now, more than 50 UGC-approved colleges and institutes have been permitted to offer online degree programs.
