Tamil Nadu Government Offers Rs 5 crore to Establish a Tamil Literature Department at JNU


New Delhi: On Tuesday, the Government of Tamil Nadu has announced that it would grant Rs 5 crore to establish a separate department of Tamil Literature at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi. 

According to a deal to be signed by the Director of Tamil Development and JNU, the Tamil literary department would be founded. "Tamil Literature Studies, Tamil and Dravidian Linguistics Studies, Tamil and Southern History, Social Studies, and the Tamil Department of Jawaharlal Nehru University have been restructured as the Tamil Literature Department. 5 crore rupees have been allocated for this purpose" In a statement, the Tamil Nadu government stated.

The sanctioned amount will be treated as a fixed deposit and the interest earned will be used to pay teachers' salaries and other appropriate expenditures, according to the state government's instructions.

The Department of Tamil Literature will provide comparative studies, postgraduate coursework, expert translations of literary works, and guest scholars for the implementation of projects. 

In addition to collaboration with international institutions, a residence program for Tamil academics and teacher workshops will also be implemented, according to an official release. 

Currently, JNU provides a PhD in Tamil through the Center for Indian Language. However, it does not provide a master's degree program in Tamil. 

In a letter to Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin, JNU Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit congratulated him for the effort and praised the state government's financial assistance as a "wonderful service to Tamil development."
