Professor Amit Prashant is to take charge as the Director of IIT Gandhinagar from today, January 4, 2022 as founding Director Professor Sudhir K Jain bade farewell to IIT Gandhinagar.
Professor Jain, has left the IIT Gandhinagar to receive his post as the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi.
According to Professor Jain, “It’s overwhelming for me, but I am sure that the institute is in great hands. IITGN will continue to scale newer heights with fresh ideas, opportunities and collaborations. There is a great future here. I am grateful to all for being with me during these 12 years and for all the affection and support.”

Professor Jain took charge as the Vice-Chancellor at BHU in November, 2021. In 2019, he joined the IIT Gandhinagar as the founding director. Recently, he was presented with the prestigious Padma Shri Award for his distinguished service in the areas of science and technology.
Under his leadership, several new innovations in student affairs, curriculum, and institutional management have been introduced in order to promote growth and excellence among the students and faculty members. Leading the development of the new campus of IIT Gandhinagar, he made it the first campus in India to receive the 5-star GRIHA-LS rating.
In addition to that, he has also contributed enormously to the field of earthquake engineering practice and education in India.

He initiated the development of various significant seismic codes in India. Along with training several engineers and teachers in earthquake engineering, he established NICEE or the National Information Centre of Earthquake Engineering and contributed to the development of the National Programme on Earthquake Engineering Education or NPEEE, supported by the Indian Government.
In addition to this, Dr. Jain has also served as a major consultant for projects related to bridges, petrochemical pipelines, concrete dams and so on. His research interests vary from the study of damages caused by earthquakes to the development of sound concrete buildings and constructions.
Established in the year 2008, IIT Gandhinagar is one of the new 8 IITs. Even though it’s a second generation IIT, the Government of India has declared it as the Institute of National Importance.
It is popular for offering several UG, PG, Doctoral courses on subjects such as sciences, engineering, humanities and social sciences, etc.
