PM Modi to Inaugurate 11 New Medical Colleges in Tamil Nadu Via Video Conferencing on Jan 12; Read Details Here


New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate 11 new Government medical colleges across Tamil Nadu on January 12, 2022. The inauguration ceremony will be done via video conferencing owing to surge in Covid-19 cases

The PMO will also inaugurate the new campus of Central Institute of Classical Tamil in Chennai (CICT). 

The medical colleges are built across 11 districts of Tamil Nadu to provide sufficient medical infrastructure to the residents. 

The districts where the medical colleges will be inaugurated are Virudhunagar, Nilgiris, Namakkal, Thiruvallur, Tiruppur, Ngapattinam, Kallarkurichi, Dindigul, Ariyalur, Krishnagiri and Ramanathapuram

The cost to establish the medical colleges is approximately Rs. 4000 crore. Of this amount, the Union Government has been provided around Rs. 2145 crore and the rest has been arranged by the state Government of Tamil Nadu. 

The soon to be inaugurated medical colleges are an extension of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constant attempt to provide and promote affordable medical education as well as improve the existing health infrastructure of the entire country. 

With an accumulative capacity of 1450 seats, these medical colleges are being developed as per the centrally sponsored scheme of ‘Establishing New Medical Colleges attached with Existing District/Referral Hospital.’ As per this scheme, the medical colleges were planned to be established in those districts that did not have any Government or private medical colleges. 

Following the successful inauguration these colleges will soon offer medical programs like MBBS, B.Sc Nursing, BDS which improve the overall medical seats in the state.

CICT New Campus Inauguration

According to the PMO, the development of a new campus of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil in Chennai is as per the Prime Minister’s vision to develop, nurture and promote the Indian heritage and its classical languages. 

CICT is currently functioning from a rented building, however, after the inauguration, it will operate from the new three-storey campus. The new campus includes a spacious, well-built library, an e-library, lecture halls of smaller size along with a multimedia hall. 

About CICT 

CICT, an autonomous organisation under the supervision of the Union Ministry of Education, is developed to contribute to and promote the rich heritage of classical Tamil language by conducting extensive research and with an aim to reestablish the ancient lineage and uniqueness of the Tamil language. 

The CICT library includes an extensive collection of more than 45,000 ancient Tamil language books. 

To promote the classical Tamil language and encourage the students, the institute is to conduct several academic activities such as seminars, conferences, training programmes, granting relevant fellowships and so on. 

The new campus with its top class facility will encourage more students from all over the world to pursue classical Tamil language.
