OP Jindal Global University Establishes Jindal Global Centre on G20 Studies

New Delhi: O.P. Jindal Global University has recently established the Jindal Global Centre for G20 Studies. The center will aim to focus on research, thought leadership, and capacity building initiatives relating to G20.

In light of India inheriting the G20 Presidency on December 1, 2022, O.P Jindal Global University has made efforts to construct this Center. A total of 20 nations and the European Union make up the G20, which is an intergovernmental organisation.

The primary goal of the center is to address problems with the world economy, particularly those involving international financial stability, reducing global warming, and sustainable development. But it's important to remember that the G20 includes the biggest economies in both developed and developing nations.

Surprisingly, the G20 represents over 80% of the worldwide Gross Domestic Product (GDP), 75% of global trade, 2/3 of the world's population and 60% of its land area.

The Jindal Global Center for G20 Studies (JGC4G20) will have five main goals: first is to develop a strong vision for enabling academic institutions throughout the G20 region to build international collaborations between them.

The second goal is to launch new initiatives to promote G20 studies and a greater understanding of the countries in G20 in all its dimensions across other Indian higher education institutions. Third is to organise recurring lectures.

The fourth goal aims to build and strengthen capacities for pursuing research relating to G20 countries within India with a strong focus on joint research between institutions. The last goal is to develop multisectoral training and capacity building programmes in close partnership with higher education institutions in G20.

Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, the Founding Vice Chancellor of JGU observed, “As India assumes the Presidency of G20, this will be the first such Centre established by any Indian university. This will be a university-wide research centre, which will pursue initiatives in this year of India's Presidency of G20".

"I am happy to announce the appointment of Professor (Dr.) Mohan Kumar, former Indian Ambassador to France and the Dean of the Office of International Affairs & Global Initiatives at JGU as the Inaugural Director of the JGC4G20", he added.

In his analysis of the importance of this idea, Professor Kumar shared that the goal of creating a G20 Global Education Forum is to open the door to another summit that will bring together the top G20 colleges and be held concurrently with the G20 summit.

The goal of this centre is to expand beyond the current G20 structure, which only includes governmental entities, lawmakers, and diplomats. It will need a total reimagining incorporating other participants, especially the young people for the G20 to function more democratically as an international platform.

Its engagement will send a strong message to make the G20's operations more inclusive, as will the participation of institutions, especially their academics, even if it is in a separate forum held in conjunction with the G20 Summit, he further added.
