The Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, has announced a plan to set up a new medical college and hospital in Kandhamal district that will offer a total of 100 MBBS seats.
The minister confirmed that a whopping INR 504 crores has been estimated as the total budget for the new Medical Colleges in Orissa. The medical college and hospital will be set up in the underdeveloped Kandhamal district with a total of 500 beds.
The minister said this while distributing the state government's health smart cards in the Kandhamal district. The medical hospital will be a boon to the local population across the district, as it will offer more accessible health care facilities at their disposal.
Earlier in April 2021, Suresh Chandra Mohapatra, the Chief Secretary along with a high-level team of authorities had inspected the Kandhamal Medical College and Hospital to review the progress.
Post the visit in April, the CMO Odisha tweeted that as per the direction of Odisha CM, the chief secretary along with high-profile members visited the Kandhamal medical college and hospital in Phulbani to review the construction.

The MoS Health Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar shared data to the Lok Sabha, which stated that the state has a total of 1950 MBBS seats in 12 medical colleges. While distributing the government's health smart cards in the district, the CM announced the plans of establishing a new medical college and hospital.
The smart cards were distributed under Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana, a universal health insurance scheme, a flagship programme of the Odisha government. Through the smart card, the beneficiary will receive medical benefits of up to INR 5 lakh, and it will cover up a total of INR 10 lakh every year for the medical coverage of women.
Around 6.5 lakh people of the Kandhamal district will receive health care benefits under the scheme. Patnaik said that the state government had decided to bring 3.5 crore people of 96 lakh families under this health scheme so that all of them will get health smart cards.
Nearly 16 districts across the state have been covered under the health insurance scheme of Odisha government.
According to the reports, the CM also stated that the beneficiaries are eligible for healthcare services in around 200 hospitals across India.
