NMC Announces First-year MBBS Batch to be Completed in 11 Months; Check Details Here

New Delhi: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced that the first-year MBBS batch 2021-22 will be completed in 11 months instead of 13 months, owing to the delay in medical admissions, this year.

According to the NMC's announcement, the academic calendar for the current MBBS batch 2021-22, will commence from February 14, and conclude in June 2027, including a mandatory internship.

Keeping in mind the delay in medical admissions this year, the NMC has taken this decision. The commission has also notified that in spite of the delay in admissions, the academic curriculum for the undergraduate medical courses will be completed within the prescribed time mentioned in the regulations.

The NMC has planned to conduct the foundation courses after the normal teaching hours or on weekends and holidays in order to ensure that the quality and quantity of the course curriculum is not compromised.

As per the NMC notification, the foundation courses will be covered after the completion of usual teaching hours or on weekends/holidays. Thus the first professional (year) has been compressed to eleven months instead of thirteen months.

Further, the notification read that vacations have also been curtailed for the first, second and third professionals by one month. As a result, each (medical) professional phase of training has been compressed by one month.

The change in the duration of the course has been caused due to the delay in admissions this year. Although the NEET-UG 2021 exams were planned to be conducted in May 2021, it was finally conducted in September 2021.

Post that, the state common entrance test (CET) announced the first round of seat allotment in the state on February 1, 2022. Also, the NMC has clarified that even though it appears as though the MBBS course time has been shortened, the actual teaching and training hours have been preserved through the absorption of buffer time available during the course.

The NMC notified that care has been taken to not curtail practical and clinical postings and that the mandatory internship will remain for one year only.
