NIT Trichy Hosts a One-Week Training Programme in Translation; Check Details Here


New Delhi: NIT Trichy has joined hands with the National Translation Mission (NTM), Government of India, and Tamil Nadu Text Book and Educational Services Corporation (TNTB&ESC) to host a one-week Online Translation Training Programme titled 'Text and Context in Translation’.

Inaugurated on July 18, 2022, the programme offered by NIT Trichy began with the welcome address by the programme Convener Dr VK Karthika and the presentation of the concept note presented by the co-convener Dr Tariq Khan (NTM).

The president's talk was delivered by Professor G. Aghila, Director of NIT Tiruchirappalli, who also discussed the importance of the translation workshop and how it links to NEP 2020. 

She stated that the large-scale translation training programmes are urgently required and emphasised the value of translation by highlighting the necessity of making knowledge materials accessible in regional languages to ensure inclusive access to information.

Prof Aghila commended the program's convener Dr. VK Karthika and co-conveners Prof. R. Joseph Ponniah and Dr. Tariq Khan for putting together a fantastic panel of prominent speakers.

The programme was inaugurated by the chief guest, Sri Prince Rama Varma, a member of the Travancore Royal Family and a well-known singer, author, and translator. 

During his inaugural address, he explained the odd relationship between music, translation, and culture to discuss the importance of translation in granting access to great literature and old knowledge.

Professor Shailendra Mohan, the Director of Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) Mysuru, offered felicitations. 

R Gajalakshmi, IAS, the Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Text Book and Educational Services Corporation (TNTB&ESC), Dr S Kannappan, Member Secretary of  TNTB ESC, Dr. M. Shankara Saravanan Joint Director TNTB&ESC and Professor VN Rajasekharan Pillai, the former UGC Chairman were also present at the event. 

Professor Muthukumaran, Dean of R&C NIT Trichy also congratulated. The inaugural ceremony was followed by sessions led by Professor K Narayana Chandran, Institution of Eminence Research Chair in Literary and Cultural Theory, University of Hyderabad, and by renowned author and literary critic Githa Hariharan. Professor R Joseph Ponniah, the co-convenor, gave the vote of thanks and wrapped up the event.

The second day's panel discussion was inaugurated by R Gajalakshmi, IAS, the Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Text Book and Educational Services Corporation (TNTB & ESC), by emphasising the Chief Minister's efforts to preserve the lost ancient knowledge that is hidden in Tamil scriptures. 

She described the sincere efforts made by the Tamil Nadu government to launch the project "Taking Tamil to the World: Transcending Boundaries." She spoke about the value of translation in locating, safeguarding, archiving, and ultimately reviving the old Tamil literature with Dr. S. Kannappan (Member Secretary, TNTB & ESC), Dr. M. Shankara Saravanan (Joint Director, TNTB & ESC), and Mini Krishnan (Co-ordinating Editor, TNTB & ESC).

With Justice Prabha Sridevan (Madras High Court), Malini Seshadri, Vasantha Surya, G Geetha, V Ramakrishna, Darun, and Arun as participants, Mini Krishnan chaired the second panel discussion. The third session was led by acclaimed translator Professor Catherine Thankamma, whose insightful discussion covered the complexities of translating Dalit literature.

A well-known translator and critic from the University of Calicut, Professor KM Sheriff, lectured on copyright difficulties and worries on the third day, July 20, 2022. The fundamental problems in text and context in translation were discussed by Professor Sushanth Kumar Mishra of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi (JNU New Delhi), a renowned novelist, translator, and literary critic.

The sessions and discussions will be led in the forthcoming days by Professors GJV Prasad ( JNU, New Delhi ), VB Tharakeshwar ( EFLUniversity Hyderabad ), Vanamala Viswanatha (Author & Translator), Tejaswini Niranjana ( Ahmedabad University ), J Devika (Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram), and K Srilatha ( IIT Madras ).
