New Delhi: In view of the recent COVID-19 pandemic situation, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has announced today that the MBBS academic session 2021-22 will commence from February 14, 2022.
NMC’s official notification has explained how the academic sessions in the last year suffered due to the disastrous impact of COVID 19 and the MBBS course had to suffer a severe delay. Therefore, NMC has decided to begin the session from February 14th this year.
NMC follows the Graduate Medical Education Regulation 1997 to stipulate academic session dates and duration of undergraduate courses. “The academic curriculum for the undergraduate courses shall be completed within the stipulated time as prescribed in the aforementioned regulations", the notification further reads.
Curriculum Revised for First Professional, Foundation Courses in MBBS Academic Session 2021-22
NMC has updated the academic curriculum details on the official website. Here is a few highlights from the curriculum details:
-The foundation course of the scheduled one month is to be included in the first professional 11 months training period. This will be covered after the scheduled teaching hours or during the holidays or weekends
-The first professional training period has been reduced to 11 months from earlier prescribed 13 months
-Moreover, the vacations have been reduced for the first, second and third professionals by one month. Thus, each professional phase of training has been reduced by 1 month.
-The first professional examinations for the MBBS 2021/22 academic session will most likely take place in June 2026.

-NMC has attempted not to bring any change into the practical as well as clinical postings. Therefore, the internship period will remain one year.
NMC has further assured that even if the course duration appears to be shortened, training hours and actual teaching hours have been preserved for the gap time periods available during the courses and vacations.
