Karnataka to Set Up Nine Medical Colleges Under PPP Model: Read More

As per the latest announcement made by Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr. K Sudhakar, nine new medical colleges will be established in the state under the Public-private partnership (PPP) model of the Karnataka Government.

Under the Public-Private Partnership, the Karnataka Government will inaugurate medical colleges in Vijayapura, Bengaluru rural, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Kolar, Bagalkot, Davangere, Chitradurga, and Tumkur Districts.

In order to facilitate the medical colleges, the Karnataka state government required a fund of INR 610 crore for the building of a medical college, while INR 60 crore is required for the rotatory expenses.

Talking about the establishment of medical colleges in the state, Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr. K Sudhakar said that the state government has requested financial assistance from the central government for medical colleges’ buildings and expenses.

Karnataka Government needs a total of INR 670 crores to start the construction work and facilitate the medical colleges in the state. Out of the total funds required, 60% are provided by the Central government, while the remaining 40% are offered by the state government.

If the central government rejects the model and does not release the required funds, the construction work for new medical colleges in the state will become very challenging.

After evaluating the situation, the Karnataka government has launched its Public-Private Model to facilitate medical colleges in the state.

Earlier, on December 15, 2021, the Karnataka Government had also announced its decision to upgrade the state-run universities facilitated under Visvesvaraya Technological University, VTU to the IIT level. The decision was made to offer excellent education facilities to students.

Referring to the decision, the Higher Education Minister C N Ashwathnarayan said, “This would get students aspiring to get engineering education attracted to these colleges”.

“The government is also favorable in granting more autonomy and establishing governing boards to look after their management," he added.

The action plan for the same is now expected to be prepared by VTU Vice-Chancellor Prof Karisiddappa within a month. Actions for the upgrade of facilities will soon come to action under the directions of the state government.
