JNU to Now Offer Ph.D Admission to Foreign Students Only if Seats are Left Vacant; Details Here

Jawaharlal Nehru University announced that foreign students can enter Ph.D. courses only if they become vacant after being offered to Indian candidates.

The Ph.D. admission preference is for the Indian candidates who have appeared for the JNU Entrance Exam (JNUEE) 2021. If any of the seats are vacant after the admission of Indian students, then only the foreign students will be considered.

The admission clarification was issued by JNU Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar. The declaration was given by the VC after three Afghan students seeking admission to Ph.D. had written to JNU. They requested to ease the admission procedures, due to their dwindling situation in their country, Afghanistan.

JNU conducts entrance exams for admission to various academic programs. The reservation and number of seats and other admissions policies are revised every year with UGC guidelines and Union government rules. The rules and regulations vary for different categories and merit lists are prepared accordingly. The different categories for each study program are a General category, Scheduled castes, Scheduled tribes, other backward classes, EWS category, PWD category, and foreigners.

JNU on Foreign Students Admission

According to UGC 2016 Regulations, Foreign students are offered Ph.D. admission only if seats are left vacant in any discipline after being offered to Indian candidates who have appeared in the JNU entrance exam.

The National Testing Agency conducts computer-based tests (CBT), live voice testing, etc for admission into its academic programs. The final selection is on the basis of the inter-se merit of the candidates in their respective categories based on their performance on the CBT and viva voce.

Doctoral admissions at JNU are based on the 2016 University Grants Commission gazette notification. The number of Ph.D. seats is based on the vacancies with each faculty member and available research resources.

JNU does not have the right to create supernumerary doctoral positions, while supernumerary positions are possible in non-doctoral programs.

For admission to university programs, JNU allocates five percent supernumerary seats to widows/wards of Armed Forces Personnel killed/disabled in war.
