JNU Teachers Association Demands Better Guidelines For Evaluating Candidates; Full Report Here

Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association has requested for a consultation to be held for evolving the guidelines released for conducting viva voce and evaluating candidates. The demand was made to provide a fair evaluation process for admission.

The demands were made after students and faculty members reasoned with Jawaharlal Nehru University regarding unfairness in its Ph.D. program admission process. The allegations were made due to discrimination faced by students belonging to marginalised sections.

Talking about the demands, Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association stated that in the JNU Admission process, the final selection of students is done based on marks secured by candidates in the written and viva voce examination.

However, the selection process criteria were stopped a few years back and since then students are now only providing their information about their own marks, JNUTA stated on Friday, December 24, 2021.

The teacher's association demanded the university administration make the candidate's marks data accessible to all so that no further discrimination will be done in the admission process.

"JNUTA also demands that a university wide consultation be initiated so as to evolve guidelines for conducting viva voce and evaluating performance of applicants in a fair manner" JNU officials added.

As of now, the Jawaharlal Nehru University has no clear guidelines on how the admission process and interview board will be constituted. The candidates evaluation process for the admission selection is still now clear.

The university officials stated that allegations have been found against some centers and chairpersons regarding unfair means in the admission process. As per the allegations, the chairpersons have unilaterally taken decisions about the selection process.

In response to queries made by JNTU, the university administration has denied the allegations. “The endeavor to institutionalize a free and fair process of access represents a challenge which must be given utmost priority and satisfactorily addressed without any delay".

JNUTA urged the university to make necessary changes in the deprivation points system at the Ph.D. level. Further changes are also required in the university’s admission policy as well as in the conduction of Jawaharlal Nehru University Entrance Exam (JNUEE).

"This is necessary for the context of repeated allegations that students from deprived backgrounds face increased exclusion in the new system, and strengthen affirmative action so as to minimize inequity in institutional access to higher education," JNUTA added.
