NITI Aayog CEO, Amitabh Kant has stated that India is in need of a multi-pronged approach to internationalize its Indian higher education system.
Amitabh Kant was present at the India Pavilion EXPO2020 Dubai, addressing the session on Internationalization of Indian higher education system.
Addressing the attendees, he said that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 envisions globalizing the Indian higher education system and establishing India as a Vishvaguru. Thus, in order to achieve the vision, it is important to acknowledge and introspect the current challenges and trends.
It should be noted that the higher number of outflow of Indian students to international universities and inflow of a lower number of students to Indian universities reflect the suboptimal education quality in India when compared to the overseas universities, Kant said.
Elucidating on the multi-pronged approach to globalize the Indian higher education system, Kant said that a development plan with a vision to excel in the respective fields should be created by all the higher education institutes as per the NEP 2020 suggestions.
Further, the universities must use the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings and analyze their areas where there is scope of improvement in rankings. They should leverage the competition advantages and traditional knowledge systems of India by integrating with modern day studies like architecture, medicine, and sustainability, Kant added.

He said that in order to promote indigenous natural practices for foreign learners, short-term diplomas and courses can be introduced by partnering with Ministry of Ayush and Universities
Speaking about ranking all the educational institutions, Kant said that the institutions taking part in the India Learning scheme should be ranked based on the ease of studying with a higher weightage provided to the international students' review, as it will assist the institutes to improve their overall quality and gain more participation from international students.
Furthermore, the Indian education institutions must raise funds to upgrade their quality and one of the tapped areas to be improved can be the Public-Private-Partnership, for example, the IIITs In India, he said.
Kant said that the government has recently modified the viability gap funding scheme to cover the social infrastructure projects that includes higher education and universities to use this scheme to benefit themselves.
Expressing his happiness and feeling proud to speak as the product of Indian education, Dr Raghunath Mashelkar, National Research Professor, and Former Director General, CSIR addressed virtually saying that India will regain its place as a leader in the field of science & technology, innovation, philosophy and broader aspects of knowledge.
Dr Vidya Yeravdekar, Chair, FICCI Higher Education Committee & Pro Chancellor Symbiosis International University said that India will have multiple universities offering outstanding education services with the adoption of NEP.
Further, the Indian youth, the international students, and the NRIs living abroad must visit India, be a part of India's growth and experience the excellent education system of India, Yeravdekar concluded.
