New Delhi: For the third year running, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee wins the Industrial Innovation Awards 2022 presented by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) as the "most creative research institute of the year". The first runner-up in the same category is IIT Madras.
As per the officials, IIT Roorkee earned the prize at the 9th edition of the CII Industrial Innovation Awards 2022, which was held in conjunction with the CII Advanced Materials Summit 2022. It has achieved the three pillars of innovation, disruptive innovation, innovation quotient and innovation realization.
During the award ceremony, IIT R was also named the category winner for "innovation quotient" for its efforts in the fields of technology, remediation, and energy storage devices, among other areas.
Innovations from IIT Roorkee that helped the team win the award are its thermoplastic starch to create biodegradable low-density polyethene to address the issue of polybags and make them more environmentally friendly.
The institute's scientists created high-performance, inexpensive, fast-charging, safe, and fire-prevention batteries using sodium-ion cells produced from materials that are ubiquitous on Earth. And a low-cost recycling method was developed to turn garbage into wall tiles, paver blocks, and packs of polythene.
On this occasion, a compendium containing the above-mentioned innovations from IIT Roorkee and the innovations of the other top Innovative Organizations of 2022 has also been released. The institute has created a number of programmes to promote connections between business and academia, including the Tech-Sarthi programme, startup Expo, technology carnivals, and others.
Additionally, the organisation is currently assisting over 130 start-ups through its I-hub Divyasampark and Technology Incubation and Entrepreneurship Development Society (TIDES).
IIT Roorkee Director K K Pant congratulated the Institute and said: "We are thrilled to receive CII's Industrial Innovation Award for three consecutive years in a row. The Institute is keen on the overall development of the students and imparting the skill of research and entrepreneurship".
"It also provides an ambience and ecosystem that inspire students to strive towards innovation in their field of interest continuously. I hope that we continue to achieve such pinnacles of success in all spheres of academics, research and innovation and make our Institute proud", he added.
