National Conference on Tribal Development in India:

New Delhi: IIT Roorkee is hosting a National Conference on “Tribal Development in India: Prospect and Retrospect”. The conference started on February 3 and will be held till February 4, 2023 with the support of Indian Council for Social Science Research.

As per IIT Roorkee, the National Conference on Indian Tribal Development in India is being held as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. The symposium discusses the problem and issues surrounding tribal development in India.

The seminar will include discussions on constitutional rights and protection, government and administration, and responsibility of the state, governance, health, livelihood, identity and tribes, tribal women's prosperity, regional development, and tribes and environment.

On the first day, the IIT Roorkee National Conference 2023 was attended by Professor K. K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, along with Professor Virginius Xaxa, Visiting Professor at Institute for Human Development (IHD), New Delhi who shared his ideas with the attendees.

In addition to this, Dr Bipasha Rosy Lakra, Professor V. Bijukumar, Dr Shreya Jessica Dhan, Dr Jadhav Prathap Singh, Shivangi Baruah, Ramengmawia Bawitlung and Mrinalini Raj among others spoke at the symposium regarding the situation of tribal communities in India.

The Institute of Human Development's guest lecturer, Professor Virginius Xaxa, remarked, "There are notable disparities in regard to the levels of tribal development owing to the diversity and geographic distribution of the tribal communities based on states and regions.”

He added, “For example, there has been little progress made equally in schooling. The majority of Northeastern states, including Mizoram and Nagaland, have excellent literacy rates of 91.51 percent and 80.04 percent, respectively, according to the 2011 Census."

IIT Roorkee Director Professor K K Pant remarked, "Around 8.6% of all people in India are members of one or more tribes. For the tribes' socio-cultural interests and political rights, numerous unique constitutional amendments are being drafted, especially on affirmative action, administration, political representation, and resource availability, among other things."

In post-independent India, the issue of tribal development is an urgent one. To elevate and better their situation, the government implemented many policies and programs.

Since becoming autonomous, several practices and initiatives have been implemented to improve the living standards of the tribes with a focus on food security, occupation, health, education, and income production.
