IIT Roorkee organises the programme which is an initiative by the Government of India for road safety policies. The course aims at making a pool of well-trained road safety auditors in the country. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is signed by IIT Roorkee, IRC, and MoRTH for conducting three courses to reduce road crashes to 50% by the year 2030.

As per the Road Accident Statistics published by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, in the year 2020 road accidents claimed more than 1,30,000 lives in India. The reason behind such a mishap is driver errors, over-speeding, drinking and driving, and the negligence of other drivers. Even the stats revealed that poor construction of roads is also a reason for such road accidents.

Due to road crashes India loses 3% of its GDP. To eliminate road crashes there have to be effective methods to audit a road project, from designing to traffic.
