New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee’s (IIT Roorkee) start-up Indi Energy, which specialises in manufacturing sodium-ion batteries, has won the National Startup Awards 2022 in ‘Energy Storage’ category.

IIT Roorkee backed Start-up, Indi Energy has won the National Startup Awards 2022 in the energy storage category. This was the third edition of the National startup award.

The awards are aimed at honoring businesses that offer innovative and ground-breaking solutions that encourage the nation’s sustainable economic development and provide large-scale employment opportunities.

The start-up Indi Energy from IIT Roorkee specializes in producing sodium-ion batteries, as a result of which, the start-up has won the National Startup Awards 2022 in the category "Energy Storage."

Recently, the award, which was presented in Delhi, honours and recognises India's most inventive and promising startups. Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce and Industries, Government of India, gave the certificate of commendation in honour of the accomplishment.

During the awards ceremony, Goyal addressed the audience and noted that India is now the third largest ecosystem for start-ups in the world. And without the introduction of Digital India, this ambition would not have been attainable.

Congratulating everyone for making that first step in the direction of becoming a developed country, he said that the third iteration of the awards was created to recognise companies that bring novel and ground-breaking solutions that support the country's sustainable economic growth and generate significant employment possibilities.

According to Prof. KK Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, the National Startup Award 2022 is one of the most prominent accolades in the Indian start-up ecosystem. IIT Roorkee is dedicated to offering start-ups established by IITR staff and students hand-holding support. Additionally, the ecosystem is continually improved to support new ideas and innovation in science and technology.

An initiative to support faculty-led start-ups had just been introduced by the institute. It encourages the commercialization of technology created by faculty at IIT Roorkee. Prototyping, pilot testing, and marketing costs are covered by this help.

Expressing his delight, the co-founder of Indi Energy, Prof. Yogesh Kumar Sharma, remarked that they are happy to be setting the pace for sodium-ion battery research in India. The mission is to make India energy independent and self-sufficient in sustainable energy storage technologies, and this award is a step in that direction.

He also appreciated the Government of India's recognition of their work and the substantial assistance from IIT Roorkee.

Currently, IIT Roorkee is backing 130+ startups through TIDES (Technology Incubation and Entrepreneurship Development Society) and I-Hub Divyasampark.
