IIT Kharagpur Researchers Develops New Oral Cancer Detection Technology

New Delhi: Researchers of IIT Kharagpur have developed a highly accurate technology for screening oral cancer at its early stages. The user-friendly and affordable development of the institute will now be used in various resource-constrained clinical settings.

The newly developed device of the IIT Kharagpur comprises a portable handheld unit that combines various sensors and controllers.

IIT Kharagpur Researchers Develops New Oral Cancer Detection Technology

The working of oral cancer detection technology includes a simple automated machine that uses a touch-free approach.

With the help of the Oral Cancer Detection Device, the normal, pre-cancer, and cancer cases in the oral cavity can now be classified by a computer simulation engine, without the requirement of specialized medical centers for resource-intensive diagnostic procedures.

The technology has been tested by experts from the Guru Nanak Institute of Dental Sciences and Research. The results of clinical trials established that the new method is effective in differentiating cancerous and precancerous stages of suspected oral abnormalities.

The results have proven that new Oral Cancer Detection Technology is superior in comparison to the present thermal imaging-based screening technologies used in various medical hospitals and clinics.

As of now, the research work of the IIT Kharagpur research team has been selected for publication in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, USA, and in an eminent print journal, called "In This Issue".

As per IIT Kharagpur, the technology achieves its decisive exclusivities by infusing a machine learning-based classification approach with physics-based analytics. This further helps in classifying the level of oral cancer, based on thermal images obtained from the portable device.

The first examination process of the IIT Kharagpur Oral Cancer Detecting device has saved the lives of millions. This user-friendly and affordable tool will be an important addition to clinical practice, which will further help doctors in the fight against Oral Cancer.

In another update, the IIT Kharagpur, the exam coordinator for GATE 2022, has posted an official notice on its website, hinting that GATE 2022 might be postponed amid the COVID-19 crisis. The notice came after over 23k students demanded the postponement of the exam.

Looking at the current scenario, it is expected that the IIT Kharagpur Admission 2022 may also get delayed for IITK UG and PG Courses if the entrance exams are not conducted as scheduled.
