New Delhi: IIT Kanpur's Startup Incubation & Innovation Centre (SIIC) has partnered with iDEX (Innovation for Defence Excellence) to mentor and scout entrepreneurs and MSMEs to create, deploy and commercialize technologies and products for the Indian military and defence PSUs.
As a part of the partnership with iDEX, the SIIC of Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Kanpur will run programs such as accelerators, long-duration incubation, piloting, prototype investments, etc.
Earlier, the Defence Innovation Organization (DIO) was launched by the iDEX program as an effort to achieve self-reliance in the area of defence and defence production.
Speaking about the partnership, Professor Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT Kanpur said that the institute has been forging relentless partnerships with the defence sector, for academic collaboration, new innovation and drone-based initiatives.
In today’s advanced world, the institute believes that multi-stakeholder collaboration is key and the institute's aims to contribute in making India a self-reliant country in different sectors.
Further, he said that the new partnership between SIIC IIT Kanpur and iDEX would leverage the institute’s dynamic innovation ecosystem and strength in aerospace engineering, material science engineering, electro-mechanical systems and design for true actualization of the program’s vision.
Approved by the Ministry of Defence, the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) framework was formulated “to operationalize and institutionalize the effort to reach out and engage the smaller enterprises, startups and innovators, which have the competence, flexibility and adaptability to supply the Indian military with innovative and ingenious technological solutions.
These primary goals of iDEX, SIIC IIT Kanpur and other incubators will help the iDEX to work towards assisting startups and MSMEs in the product development segment of India’s defence sector and making India self-reliant.
