IIT Jodhpur Collaborates with AIIMs and DART to Research for a Rare Genetic Disease

New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology, Jodhpur has collaborated with AIIMS (the All India Institute of Medical Sciences), and Dystrophy Annihilation Research Trust, Bangalore to establish a research centre.

IIT Jodhpur has informed that the research centre is to conduct further studies on DMD (Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy), a rare, genetic illness and find possible cures.

DMD is one of the most prevalent types of Muscle Dystrophy and is also very fatal. This disease is mostly seen in boys. Currently, in our country, about 5 lakh boys are suffering from DMD.

The treatment options available for DMD at the moment are very nominal and expensive(over Rs 2-3 crore per child annually). The main reason for this is that drugs are being imported from abroad. Because of this, the dosing costs are quite high and out of reach for EWS.

The research centre at the IIT Jodhpur is working on developing inexpensive remedies for this disease as well as improving the efficacy of Antisense Oligonucleotide (AON)-based therapeutics. Bioengineering techniques will be adopted under the ‘Make in India’ (Atma Nirbhar) initiative.

Prof. Surajit Ghosh, Dean, Research and Development, Professor of Bioscience and Bioengineering, IIT Jodhpur, said, ‘The primary goal of our team is to develop two therapeutic leads for clinical trials on high priority.’

Besides focusing on developing affordable medicine, the research centre will also focus on organising social awareness programs on DMD and extending support for children with DMD and their families.
