Earlier, the IIT JEE exams were already being conducted in 12 countries. Last year only, the exam was conducted in Kuala Lumpur and Lagos. As per the officials, the exam is now expected to be conducted in countries such as China, the US, UAE, Australia, South Africa, Singapore, Indonesia, Nepal, Malaysia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and some others. This system, however, will not be applicable for admission to the IITs

As per this initiative, candidates will be facilitated with 3900 UG and 1300 PG seats. The seats will be reserved in the following Engineering institutes and some others:

  • National Institute of Technology (NIT)
  • National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT)
  • Indian Institute of Information Technology (IITs)
  • School of Planning and Architecture (SPA)

Approximately 15% of seats are reserved for NRIs and Foreign students in these institutes. According to the Union Education Ministry, Foreign students and NRIs will be able to gain admission into the top-tier Engineering institutions under the Direct Admission of Student Abroad (DASA) Scheme.

As per reports, Indian Ambassadors across the world have been contacted already regarding this golden opportunity. Countries such as Netherlands, Japan, Russia, Italy, South Korea, Taiwan, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, the UK, Canada. Australia, Thailand, Germany, the UAE, Greece, Brazil, Cyprus, Turkey and Iceland have already shown enough interest regarding this initiative.

The MInistry has explained that this initiative will not only help the Indian Higher Education Institutions to establish good relations with the Foreign institutes, but also the foreign institutes will be encouraged to send their students to this country.

According to IIT Professor D K Sharma, every year, thousands of Foreign nationals come to India seeking admission to the multiple courses offered by several institutes in the country.

Contrary to earlier, when the opportunities for students from the foreign countries were somewhat limited, this particular initiative will be able to give them a much wider scope to study in Indian Higher Education Institutes.

BJ Rao, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad (UoH), said, "The Education Minister's decision is in consonance with the setting up of Indian HELS campuses abroad which is an ongoing process. This initiative can be termed as a part of ‘India’s globalization”.

“Even many foreign countries have shown deep interest in setting up Indian HELs campuses on their land due to the fact that in our country there exists a high education power in terms of teaching, content, and scholarships" he further added.

Adding to the statement, the Vice-chancellor of Central University of Punjab, Bathinda informed that with this decision, Indian Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) will receive international exposure which will further help them in competing in the global learning environment.
