The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad and the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) Japan, have launched “IITH-NIMS Joint Research Center" at NIMS.
For the purpose of exchange of researchers and scientific information, the IITH-NIMS had signed their first agreement in 2019 on the promotion of comprehensive research cooperation.
Thereafter, the two institutes (IITH and NIMS) signed an agreement last year on an international collaborative graduate school programme which allows the graduate students of IITH enrolled in doctoral programs to stay at NIMS for up to one year to continue their thesis research works.
The institute stated that the IITH-NIMS Joint Research Centre has been launched to conduct sustainable joint research between both the institutions.
Further, the young faculties of IITH stay at NIMS with their Ph.D students during the sabbatical leave period to develop the joint research with complementary strengths in the material science field and conduct the sustainable collaboration with the scientists at NIMS.
IITH added that the launch of the Joint Research Centre will strengthen their ties and support the upcoming future leaders of both countries to achieve the desired results in the material science field.
It was stated by the institute that two projects have been selected in the first year which will likely contribute to the industrial fields including digital information and communication and low-carbon society-related fields as these fields have strong potential growth in India.
Meanwhile, the research center will also contribute to the strengthening of the Japan-India materials technology network in the future.
The scientists of IITH and NIMS are currently preparing for research collaborations by online scientific information exchange and provision of samples, once the Covid-19 pandemic ends.
