The course will be conducted in hybrid mode from January to April, 2022. According to the institute, approximately 12 eminent speakers from India and abroad are to discover the developments of Indian Literature along with a few lesser-known features and ramifications through this course.

The introductory lecture was delivered by Ms Mana Shah on January 13, on the topic “One Tale, Two Tongues, and the Sacred Jain Site of Shatrunjaya.”

The theme of the 6th edition of this course is “Precolonial India’s Treasure House of Literatures.”

The theme focuses on the fact that India is renowned in the world for its rich collection of fine literature dating back to several millennia. According to the official brochure there is an array of languages such as Sanskrit and other regional languages in pre-colonial India.

Besides a great variety of themes, motifs, literary techniques and sociocultural functions can also be found in India. This “literature escape” affected Indian civilization and became instrumental in shaping it.

Elaborating on the theme of IKS 2022, Michel Danino, the visiting Professor, HSS, IIT Gandhinagar stated:

Indian literature is colossal. It is one of the vastest literatures of the world, with its epics, texts of philosophy and spirituality, dramas, poetical compositions, repositories of stories, folktales, technical texts on medicine, mathematics, astronomy, architecture, governance, and numerous such works in regional languages.

The Professor further commented on how Indian Literature has always been a “powerful social tool” to connect people, share multiple concepts and values along with providing a broad worldview.

IKS 2022 will include sessions on multiple related topics such as, Narrative Literature in Prakrit by JR Bhattachary, Urdu Literature by Hamid Chopra, Indian Literature by Kapil Kapoor, Kavya Literature by K Ramasubramanian, etc.

The lectures are video-recorded and will be shared on the course website and on IIT Gandhinagar’s official YouTube channel. Through the channel, candidates can access the lectures from previous 4 editions as well. The lectures are now being transcribed for publication.

IIT Gandhinagar in its official statement has praised the course as ‘path-breaking’. As per the statement, the course will explore India’s intellectual, literary, artistic, scientific and technological knowledge traditions while providing an insight into Indian civilization.
