Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, is all set to start a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) mentorship programme for the female students of Class 11 from December 30, 2021.
IIT Delhi's STEM programme will be a three-level programme including a two-weeks winter project, school internship (January-April) and 3-4 weeks summer project in May, for the girl students studying class 11.
A total of 10 students have been shortlisted from various Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) in Delhi as a part of the pilot project at the institute level.
The shortlisted students will get an opportunity to closely interact with the IIT Delhi faculty members and each student will be assigned with a dedicated mentor too.
According to the reports, Senior authorities of the institute said that over time, the STEM programme will be extended to many students studying across various schools in the city.

Pritha Chandra, associate dean of academic outreach and new initiatives said that the STEM programme is especially meant for high school girls with the goal of having an extended interaction between these shortlisted students and the IIT Delhi faculty members.
The shortlisted 10 students who were nominated by their schools have already decided their stream of study. Students were provided with a bunch of topics that were offered and each faculty member was appointed as their mentors accordingly, Chandra said.
Further, the shortlisted students will get to work on the winter internships for about a week or two before the reopening of the schools.
According to the officials, the students will get to interact with the faculty while pursuing their regular course curriculum from January to April 2022.
During the winter internship, students will be taught the basic areas to work upon and they'll have access to exclusive teaching modules after the reopening of the schools, Chanda added.
Due to the pandemic covid-19 circumstances, the institute has planned to conduct the STEM programme through the online mode. However, students will get hands-on training/ experience in the month of May or June 2022, if the situation improves.
Upon the successful completion of the STEM mentorship programme, the participants will receive the certificates, Chandra said.
Earlier, IIT Delhi established a center for excellence in smart textiles to work in the area of smart and functional textiles using emerging materials and process materials which will directly benefit the textile industry in the country.
