IIT Bombay to Introduce a Compulsory Course on Caste Awareness; Check details here

New Delhi: IIT Bombay has planned to introduce a mandatory course on caste awareness. The SC/ST cell of the institute has taken this initiative, which believes that sensitization is a way toward inclusivity.

IIT Bombay’s SC/ST Cell has conducted a survey recently to understand the difficulties that the students are facing because of caste division. As per the survey, the institute understood that it needs to hold more sensitization events and have a mandatory academic course on caste and racial discrimination.

The course would be introduced along the lines of the gender sensitization course, which was launched last year. The convenor of the SC/ST cell is Professor Bharat Adsul of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Professor Madhu N Belur of the department of Electrical Engineering.

On Wednesday the first-ever open house was held on Wednesday to discuss the difficulties faced based on caste. Around 100 students participated in the discussion and they mentioned that there is no homogeneity in how different people experience the discrimination, some get taunts regarding the reservation criteria. This leads to self-doubt among the students.

A mentorship programme has been launched by the cell. Under the programme, senior students would interact with the junior SC/ST students who have taken admission to IIT Bombay. The program will keep the objectives of the cell in mind so has to have an environment free of caste and racial discrimination on campus.

In a written statement from the cell, it was mentioned that “At IIT-Bombay, it was observed that more sensitization events would enhance inclusivity and help reduce complaints. For example, increased awareness of caste-based and racist slurs that have entered into colloquial language would help eliminate such slurs and thus, improve cordiality in any environment.”
