This year, the e-Yantra Innovation challenge of IIT Bombay aims to provide solutions for inclusive urban infrastructure. The winning teams who pass the pitching phase will get seed money from a prize pool of Rs. 1 crore.

Hosted by the CSE department of IIT Bombay, the e-Yantra project is funded by the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

This year’s themes are Sustainable and Advanced Technologies for Helping Urban Inclusivity and Agriculture.

People with disabilities (PWD), who make up nearly 2.2% of the Indian population (30 million people), but who must fall behind due to less inclusive urban areas, are catered to by inclusivity in this context.

e-Yantra is a robotics outreach programme that assists young engineers in finding technological solutions to challenges. It employs a project-based learning (PBL) strategy that enhances conventional education by offering a useful, hands-on learning opportunity.

The knowledgeable instructors help learners improve their problem-solving skills by solving the real-world problems at e-Yantra.

The e-Yantra Innovation Challenge (eYIC) is a unique annual competition that gives student teams practical training in essential skills through MOOCs before asking them to address real-world issues and build start-ups.

Since its inception in 2014, the e-Yantra Innovation Challenge has already run for nine years. Almost a total of 2,000 students have typically participated in the e-Yantra's Innovation Challenge during the past few years.

The IIT Bombay Incubator SINE provides participants with a platform to set up their own startups through the e-Yantra Innovation Challenge. Some of the startups like Nex Robotics, Nibrus Technologies (mine surveying drones), Drona Automation (sewer cleaning robots), and Katomaran (mobile robots), have already benefited from its support.

A prize pool of Rs. 1 Cr. will be used to provide seed money to winning teams who make it through the pitch process. There are also prizes worth INR 25 lakhs to be won.

The principal investigator of e-Yantra, Prof. Kavi Arya, is an advocate of transforming students' perspectives from "knowledge consumers" to "knowledge creators."

The objective of the Innovation Challenge is to develop "student disruptor innovators for local disruption."

Meanwhile, e-Yantra works to meet the objectives set forth by the National Education Policy through its interactions with three important stakeholders—colleges, teachers, and Students.

The engineering education system is supplemented with e-Yantra programmes to make students more employable and inclined toward innovation and entrepreneurship.
