IIT Bombay Becomes 1st Institute to Award More Than 400 PhD in a Year


New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay has awarded more than 449 PhD degrees during its 60th Convocation and become the first institute in India to award more than 400 PhD degrees in a year to STEM students. 

As per IIT Bombay, the degrees were offered to PhD scholars of the institute during the 60th convocation held in physical mode on campus ground on August 20, 2022. During the event, a total of 2585 recipients were awarded with 2835 degrees, out of which 449 were PhD degrees. 

Informing about the event, the IIT Bombay officials stated that it is a proud moment for the institute as it has become the very first Indian academic institute to offer more than 400 PhD degrees in a year. This will be counted as a major milestone for STEM education in India. 

The degrees were awarded in the presence of Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group who joined as a Chief Guest; Chairperson, Board of Governors (BoG) of IIT Bombay Dr. Sharad Saraf, and Institute Director Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri. Dr. Saraf. 

Four students of IIT Bombay were offered with gold medals for outstanding performance and other medals were awarded to students by donors. The award distribution event was held in physical mode after a two-year duration due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation in the country. 

Students from different streams and IIT Bombay courses such as BTech, MTech, MPhil, PhD, and MBA were also offered awards in their respective fields. The institute has recorded an increase in PhD degrees awarded to students from 181 in the last 10 years to 499 this year.

Addressing the event, Prof Subhasis Chaudhuri said, “Today’s graduating batch is not only the batch to receive the degree at the institute’s diamond jubilee convocation, but is possibly also the most ‘hardened’ batch that IITB has ever produced".

"The students have experienced with remarkable stoicism all three phases of life on the campus - pre-covid ambiance, extreme hardship due to pandemic and then the post-pandemic moments that the campus provides" he further added.
