IIM Alumni seek to implement reservation quota in PHD admissions, HC issues notice to IIMA

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Management, (IIM) Ahmedabad has been issued a notice by the Gujarat High Court in response to a petition submitted by the Global IIM Alumni Network.

IIM Alumni seek to implement reservation quota in PHD admissions, HC issues notice to IIMA

The petitioner submitted the plea in an effort to enact a reservation quota for PhD admissions. Earlier, in September 2022, IIM-Ahmedabad began the admissions process for PhD programmes for the academic years 2023–2024 without providing any reservation for SCs, STs, or OBCs.

The application was submitted by the alumni with a request to continue the admissions process.

Next Hearing to be held on November 15

Following the hearing, the High Court sent IIM-Ahmedabad a notice for a response. The case's subsequent hearing will take place on November 15, 2022.

The petitioner's attorney stated during the hearing that a request for the benefit of reservation to SCs, STs, and OBCs in PhD courses at IIM-Ahmedabad had been made in November 2021, and the High Court had at that time given a notice to the IIM.

Currently, the application procedure for the academic year 2023–24 began in September 2022 and will conclude in January 2023.

No Reservations for PhD Admission at IIMA

There are a total of 20 IIMs across the country, and 12 to 15 of them have instituted reservations in PhD programmes. However, IIM-Ahmedabad has not yet put it into practice.

According to the plea, IIM-A should offer reservations in PhD programmes as it is a central educational institution and is required to do so by the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act-2006.

Meanwhile, IIM Ahmedabad has started the application process for the PhD programme for the academic session 2022-23. Aspiring candidates can submit the online application form through the official portal, @www.iima.ac.in, by January 17, 2023.
