IIM Ahmedabad Placement 2023: India Inc. Offers Reach a Six-Year High

IIM Ahmedabad

New Delhi: Indian business conglomerates emerged as one of the top cohorts, achieving a threefold growth compared to the previous couple of years, according to the just-ended placements for the flagship PGP program offered by the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad (IIM-A).

According to authorities at IIM-Ahmedabad, conglomerates have made more than 40 offers, the most significant number since there were 48 recruitments in 2017. In context, 2021 had 12 available jobs, while 2022 had 16.

According to experts in the field, this indicates a change in applicants' preferences for placement with Indian companies that are extending their worldwide footprints and provide equivalent to or higher development potential and leadership positions compared to their foreign competitors.

The Adani Group, the Aditya Birla Group, the CK Birla Group, Tata Administrative Services, the Piramal Group, Bajaj Finserv, and JSW One Platforms Ltd were among the companies that recruited members of this cohort. Other recruiters included the CK Birla Group. Within this group, the United Arab Emirates-based company Emaar made three foreign proposals.

In contrast to the seven and nine foreign offers received in the previous placement cycles, this cycle only received eight offers.

The chairman of the placement committee, Professor Ankur Sinha, made this statement, "It is not only a matter of how things are going internationally; for the previous several years, we have seen that local offers are just as attractive, or applicants may perceive more substantial development possibilities."

"We have received several favourable proposals from the domestic market, particularly from industrial giants," professor Sinha continued.

Nevertheless, there is greater consistency following a massive recruitment campaign internationally post-Covid, and in 2022, a record 204 students were picked up by consulting majors. Consulting remained the leading recruiting cohort with more than 150 job offers.

Boston Consulting Group (BCG), the most successful employer in terms of recruitment in both 2022 and 2021, made 44 and 32 offers, respectively.

In comparison, McKinsey & Company has been the most active recruiter so far this year, making 18 offers according to the currently available data. According to the authorities in charge of placements, this year's placements saw one of the largest recruiters ever participate, totaling close to 200. Also, the ratio of applicants to recruiters was fairly distributed this year.

"While last year was an aberration due to multiple factors that saw very high recruitment by top firms, this year we have seen relatively less number of offers per firm," said Prof. Sinha.

He added that this year saw several new firms and all major regular recruiters participating. "While this year we have seen relatively less number of offers per firm," he said, "this year we have seen relatively less number of offers overall."

The authorities did not provide any information on the highest wage, but they stated that the median salary has stayed "at par" with the previous year's. The median pay has progressively risen over the last five years, from Rs 24 lakh in 2018 to Rs 31.5 lakh in 2022. This trend is expected to continue.
