Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan laid the foundation stone of two IGNOU Regional Centres buildings in virtual mode today, states a press release issued by the university.

The Education Minister laid the foundation stone of regional centre (RC) buildings of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in Agartala and Jodhpur. The event was held in virtual mode due to COVID-19 restrictions.

"Learning should not just be about obtaining occupational skills; competence in dealing with the difficulties of the twenty-first century, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills," Pradhan stated.

He expressed his delight at learning that IGNOU's programmes are in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, combining vocational and skill education. The minister also praised IGNOU for empowering the underprivileged sectors of society.

"More than 7 lakh students enrolled in the 2021 session. Women made up 47 percent of the total, with the remaining 15 percent coming from the Scheduled Tribes (ST), Scheduled Caste (SC), and Other Backward Classes (OBC) groups. More than half of the students came from rural areas, and roughly 1.5 percent came from tribal areas," he said.

"IGNOU is devoted to making higher education accessible to all Indians at an affordable cost. CPWD should stick to the timelines and budget," stated Satyakam, pro-vice chancellor. "We should embrace technology in order to become tech-enabled and provide an enhanced learning experience to young learners," stated Pro-VC Uma Knajilal.

At present, IGNOU Regional Centres promote open education systems, apart from coordinating Study Centres and Student Support Services. With the new building in place, it will aid better engagement of faculty and staff with the education services and serve as the sub-offices and resource centres, at regional levels. The regional centres in Jodhpur and Agartala are intended to serve the needs of socially and economically disadvantaged people in India's eastern and western regions.

"We shall continue our efforts to meet the Ministry's aim of 50 percent gross enrolment," stated Nageshwar Rao, vice-chancellor of IGNOU. He also complimented the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) for building the physical infrastructure.
