Delhi University Hikes Development Fee from Academic Year 2021-22; Read Details Here

Delhi University Development Fund Committee has recently increased the annual university development fees by 50%. University’s executive council made the final decision in view of the reduction in capital grants by the Union Grants Commission, UGC.

Earlier, Delhi University constituted a development fund committee to keep a tab on its fund allocation. The committee will take necessary measures and manage activities like construction of new buildings and procurement of laboratory equipment.

Till now, Delhi University charged a sum of INR 600 per student every year for its development fund. This contribution was begun from the academic session 2012-13 to save funds for the overall development of the university.

However, after the revisions, students will be required to pay the development fee of INR 900 annually.

DU Approved CUCET UG Admissions through Entrance from 2022

While talking about the initiative, the Delhi University officials said, "Keeping in view the fund requirement as well as government mandate for self-sufficiency and reduction of capital grants by UGC (University Grants Commission)".

Additionally, the development fund contribution is also necessary for the implementation of ICT (Information and Communications) enabled Infrastructure. Therefore, the UDF amount should be revised to INR 900 per student annually, the officials further added.

The request made by Delhi University Development Fund Committee was accepted by the varsity's Executive Council during a meeting held on December 17, 2021.

DU Increases Fee Due to Insufficient Funds

DU committee officials stated that the university didn’t receive sufficient funds from the Union Grants Commission for development purposes. Due to insufficient funds, the university laboratory equipment and other equipment couldn’t be updated for the past few years.

Executive Council Member Seema Das stated that the development funds collected by students were kept as emergency funds so far. The money was saved for the emergency needs of the university.

Now, if the university tries to use the funds for its infrastructure and development purposes, things will get difficult for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, other backward classes, and economically weaker section students, she further added.

Expressing their concerns, another executive council member said, "this action will force a steep hike in student's fees".

Adding to the same, Former Executive Council Member, Rajesh Jha said, "The fee hike is for a small amount but the university is seeing how this will impact students. The committee has noted that there is a shortage of grants from the UGC".

Adding to the statement, the officials said, "With this very small amount, the university is not able to purchase even single laboratory equipment for departments. The departments are regularly pursuing providing funds for replacement/purchase of laboratory equipment for academic and other research activities”, the panel added.

The approval for increasing fund contribution will be very helpful in developing and upgrading the university.

With this announcement, the development fund contribution per student has been revised to INR 900 from the earlier INR 600 charges. The funds will be collected per year by the DU Development Fund Committee.

In addition, the university has recently released the DU PG Final Merit List 2021 on its official website at du.ac.in on December 24, 2021. With the release of the final merit list, the admission window for selected candidates is now open from December 27, 2021.
