December 16, 2021: Central Government has recently given its approval for setting up three new medical colleges in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The approval announcement was made by the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare.
Following the announcement, Union Minister Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar added that the new medical colleges in the state will be set up at Machilipatnam in Krishna, Paderu in Visakhapatnam, and Pidiguralla in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh.

With this decision, Andhra Pradesh will receive an upgrade of medical facilities, an increase of medical seats, and district hospitals. The approval was given to offer the best and upgraded medical facilities to the people.
Andhra Pradesh Gets New Medical Colleges Under Centrally Sponsored Scheme
Referring to the initiative, the Health Minister stated that the establishment of these new medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh state has now been approved under the "Centrally Sponsored Scheme".

Under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme, the medical colleges will receive funds and sponsorship from the Center through the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The scheme is specially made for establishing new medical colleges attached with referral or district hospitals.
While replying to a query, the officials stated that as of now, there are a total of 16 well-facilitated and working MBBS colleges in Andhra Pradesh. The colleges were built with the approval of the Andhra Pradesh Government.
In addition to the approval of three medical colleges, the Central Government has also approved the up-gradation of three existing medical colleges in the state. The medical colleges have received approval under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
Under the approval list, colleges that will receive an upgrade of facilities are Government Medical College at Anantapur, Siddhartha Medical College in Vijayawada, and Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences at Tirupati.
Earlier, as per the information shared by the Union Health Ministry, the government has received over 157 medical colleges’ approval since 2014. The information was shared in an official response to a Right To Inform query.
In the official response, the ministry further said, “Under the scheme, 157 new medical colleges have been approved across the country in three phases. The first phase of this scheme was launched in 2014. Rs 17,691.08 crore has been spent by the Central Govt. during this period".
Following the data, the Central Government has shared a fund of over 17,691.08 crores under the centrally sponsored scheme for the upgrade and establishment of new medical colleges and facilities in the country.
