Mr. Subhasis Chowdhury is working as Assistant Professor at the Institute of Hotel and Restaurant Management. He is a well-qualified teacher in BCA Department. He has cleared NET and SET exams and has completed his Master in Computer Applications from MAKAUT University. Also, he is an alumnus of Calcutta University in the Science Department. Prof Chowdhury has an experience of 9 years in academics where he has imparted his knowledge in different MNCs as a corporate trainer. He has mastered the skills of teaching both UG and PG students. He uses his expertise in Java, and Python to provide live projects to students. In IHRM he contributes to the role of Assistant Professor in the BCA department.

Being a Faculty of the BCA Department, what are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

One of my major responsibilities is to assist and plan lessons and activities that facilitate students' acquisition of basic and advanced computer skills. I instruct in a manner that develops students' confidence in their abilities.

I have observed and managed classroom dynamics while invigilating and grading projects, quizzes, and examinations too. The most responsible role I have handled is to track and communicate students' advancement throughout the course.

How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

To establish healthy relations with students and fellow faculties, I try to be honest and fair with them. There should be ethical conduct with a caring attitude which helps to promote positive interpersonal relationships. I try to foster students with self-control, self-discipline, and responsibility to others.

I have tried to model and promote empathy, compassion, and respect for the gender, ethnic, religious, cultural, and learning diversity of students. Whenever I get the time, I demonstrate the necessary skills while managing student behavior, intervening and resolving discipline problems.

How do you try to bring in practical approach towards subjects and make it industry oriented?

To make them understand how the subjects are important in Industry, they are given practical tasks which are similar to real-life project work. They are being made to think more practically through their assignments.

What are the best practices offered by the department to the students which help them gain necessary skills?

  • To define and communicate learning expectations to students
  • To apply appropriate multiple assessment tools and strategies to evaluate and promote the continuous intellectual development of the students

  • To evaluate students’ performances in an objective, fair and timely manner

How do you strategize the curriculum and how often it gets updated to make it befitting for the students?

The curriculum gets updated regularly as per the university’s guidelines. In addition to that, recent market trends wise skill-based special classes are being conducted regularly as well.

What are your views upon the placements and higher education about the students from your department or how does your department prepare students for higher education?

Mentor them to pursue relevant opportunities to grow professionally and keep up-to-date about the current knowledge and research in the subject area. We also encourage them to attend a career fair.

How do you help your student to cope up with the competition being so high in the outside world?

We assess each student 360 degrees. On the basis of their interest, they are guided to pursue the right channel where they get more scope and opportunities.

Do you have any extracurricular activities/ programs to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to real-world challenges?

  • We are conducting a seminar on industrial expertise
  • Organise hands-on training on recent market trends

What are the challenges you faced / are facing to uplift the quality of education of your department?

To uplift the quality of education we set some plans and strategies which is a continuous process. Students have to be aware of the objectives behind each thing they are doing. As they are aware of the objectives and outcome of the process they will be focused. Its automatically

When you came to college, what was your vision and how are you trying to achieve the same?

  • To be punctual and be available at the university during official working hours
  • To comply with the policies, standards, rules, regulations, and procedures of the university

How does the curriculum of your Department/College ensure the best practice of industry?

Teachers can gear up to help students to understand knowledge and concepts outside the textbook. The more the teachers interact with the students with viable, real-life examples, incidents, etc., the students will have a better understanding and more awareness of the subject. With real-life examples, they can apply their lessons to many subjects. The teacher has to be a consistent guide here to help the student in graduating from one lesson to another.

What are the interventions and approaches you bring in apart from curriculum to train/teach the students?

We have arranged seminars, and workshops for students by industry experts. This helps to motivate students to participate in different outreach programs, certification courses etc. IHMR students are sent to an internship program to have experience prior to joining the company.
