Professor Thirukkumaran R has been working as the Faculty for Cyber Security and IIoT at JG University, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He has over 25+ years of experience in IT, Teaching, Training, Research and Consultancy domains. He has completed his PhD in the field of Internet of Things. In addition to working at JG University, he is also working as a Professor and Head (R&D), IIoT CoE at Schools Group in Bengaluru. He has strong research expertise in the areas of Wireless Network, WSN, Cyber Security, Cloud Computing, IoT, Industry 4.0 and 75 Students' Satellites Mission 2022. He is a prolific researcher and writer in the field of data science, ML and information technology etc.

Being a faculty of the Cybersecurity Department, what are your responsibilities towards the students?

"To draft and update curriculum and subject syllabus along with taking regular classes"

Being the faculty, I am responsible for preparing and distributing written syllabus describing the goals and expectations of the class to students. And building course curriculum, preparing lesson plans, mentoring students for their doubts and issues, taking regular classes, creating supplemental instructional materials, accurately evaluating students’ progress, doing research and publishing papers along with leading and directing research in a specific field are a few other responsibilities of mine I need to adhere on daily basis.


How do you establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty? 

"I regularly interact with them and try to resolve their queries and issues on time"

To have a cordial relationship with my students and fellow faculty, I regularly interact with them and ensure they can trust me while sharing their issues and queries with me. Along with this, I maintain a positive environment in and out of the classrooms so that students can share their ideas and suggestions with us freely and can contribute to their own and institute growth. 


How do you introduce a practical and industry oriented approach towards subjects?

"By conducting lot of experiments and practical"

Our curriculum mainly focuses on providing as much hands-on experience as possible to students, because teaching them only the theory part will be of no use. We discuss real life case studies while teaching our students because it provides them a base to think and find solutions to existing cybersecurity problems. We make our students capable enough so that they can work independently on topics like vulnerability assessment, penetration testing, ethical hacking techniques, secure coding and risk management techniques.


Which best practices are offered by your department to students to help them gain necessary skills? 

"We conduct events like seminars, guest talks and professional visits on a regular basis"

We have provided 24*7 access to a digital library to students to help them explore things on their own, together with support of labs to carry out practicals and events like seminar, expert talks, industrial visit and hackathons are regularly organized by us.


How do you prepare your students to cope up with this competitive world? 

"By enhancing students personality under College to Corporate Sessions program"

We have created a culture of cheerleading and good sportsmanship. We organize a “College to Corporate Sessions” program for all the students to prepare them for industries and make them aware of corporate culture. This includes time management, planning and prioritization, verbal and nonverbal skills and effective communication skills. And activities like group discussion are also organised to teach them team building skills, etiquette and interview skills. 


Which extracurricular activities are conducted by college to enhance the skills of students?

"We use case studies to teach students and also take them for field visits to give real life experience"

We use case studies to teach students during regular classes and also invite guest speakers to interact and share their experiences with us. Lastly, field trips and giving a simulative environment to students to study is what we do to enhance their skills.

The curriculum of our university is based on a simple approach of 70% hands-on experience and 30% theoretical learning. In addition to this, we offer internships to students in reputed IT organizations where they get to work on capstone projects. This helps them to directly interact with experts and industry people and they easily learn about the corporate world, its culture and how various things work there.

"Keep learning things and develop strong bonds with industry people"

I would like to advise my students to keep learning new things, but one at a time and maintain proper consistency while reading and learning. Also develop a strong network with bright minds who can help you to become a better version of yourself.
