What is the motivation that keeps you well connected with the education sector?

“Having the opportunity to find solutions to new challenges”

I am in the education sector ever since I graduated. Over the years, my roles have changed – from a young Lecturer with closer classroom interactions, I have moved to the present role where I am more involved in educational administration. However, I am fortunate to find new challenges that kept my passions alive and drove me to move on.

What is your vision/mission for the Bhartiya Skill Development University?

“Being a choice destination for skill education and research”

The vision of BSDU is ‘Global Excellence in skill education’ and in conformity with the vision, the mission of the University is to create opportunities and a conducive environment for skill development of Indian youth to make them globally employable. As President of the University, I shall have to ensure that the policies adopted and practiced are aligned to the core vision and mission.

What do you think should be the top priorities of an institute and how does Bhartiya Skill Development University align with it?

“To make the youth globally competent”

The top priorities of an Institute of higher learning will certainly include the ability to feel and adapt the changes as per the need of the hour, be truthful, and student-friendly. No compromise was made in equipping the University with the best facilities. A student-friendly approach is always at the core of its policies and functioning.

What are the biggest challenges you see prior and post Covid-19?

“To implement skill development without physical classroom supervision”

COVID 19 has made an adverse impact on all walks of life. The education sector is no exception. Online teaching is being promoted to respect and honor the restrictions necessary to keep the virus away. However, students from rural and economically distressed backgrounds find serious problems with internet connectivity and thus cannot derive the full benefit of online teaching. For a skill development university, the challenges are even greater. It is practically impossible to provide skill training through virtual mode for most of the domains. Skill development can only be achieved through actual practice.

What modifications you think would become necessary post this pandemic?

“Abiding by the COVID safety guidelines and making changes accordingly”

The pandemic has crippled society in different ways and its after-effects are not going to be over very soon. It is therefore very important to face the challenges with all seriousness but without panic. Since complete online teaching is not viable for skill education, we propose to follow a hybrid model for delivering education in near future. Theory courses and the theoretical portions of skill courses will be covered online. For practice sessions, the students will be on the campus to work in the labs and workshops. Thus the number of visits of the students to the campus will be drastically reduced and will enhance their safety. The teacher mentors are in constant touch with the students to provide them guidance and emotional support.

Holding the key position of President at Bhartiya Skill Development University, what is your philosophy of Leadership?

“Giving everyone space to present their ideas and opinions”

I always believe in participative leadership where the term ‘we’ will be used more than ‘I’. This principle also requires mutual trust and belief between the leader and the team. Fortunately, we have a very capable team and the team members are ready to take responsibilities provided they are given adequate space. The functioning of the University is therefore decentralized and the concerned members do participate and involve themselves in the final decision-making process.
