Prof Urmimala Dey Chakraborty is currently working as Professor at iLead College, Kolkata. Having a vast experience in teaching the Computer Application and Information Technology programs, she has worked as Assistant Professor and faculty at many institutes in India. Also, she is a lifetime member and technical committee member of FOSET Society. Her subjects of expertise include Computer Applications, IT, Operating Systems, Database Management Systems and Data Structures.

What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

“Maintaining and mentoring their academics”

Being specific about the responsibilities towards the students, I always persuade the overall development of academic activity for them. I emphasize on the development of study materials so that the students could go through the subjects more deeply. I also arrange for interactive meetings with the students from time to time related to their queries and improvising teaching strategies. Students come out with their problems as well as they get solutions to their problems and this builds a friendly relationship between a faculty and a student. 

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects?

“Extensive learning practices and industrial alliance”

We, on a regular basis, invite resource persons from industry and other higher educational institutions for interaction with the students in the form of expert lectures, workshops and seminars. Students are also involved with many different industries and companies for various projects during the course. Also, we have collaborations with some companies for the courses like we have Incubation Farm (iFARM) with us for the course in Cyber Security. These provide us with unique industry oriented platforms for the students providing more industry oriented learning to the students, so that a student doesn’t hesitate to make his/her place in the professional world. 

How does your department prepare students for higher education?

“Regular guidance and teaching along with prescribed curriculum”

We provide special classes and reference materials along with notes to the students for the preparation of various entrance examinations. Nowadays, we have various online platforms where our faculties take up mock tests of the students and make them practice the questions related to the entrance exams, and interview and counselling segments. We also encourage the students to take up research work related to their field of interest, and also help students to take various live projects under our guidance which help them in their future endeavours.

How do you help your student to cope up with the high competition outside?

“Awareness and preparation with advanced fields”

We prepare the students by making them familiar with the new expertise for the coming times. We encourage the students to discover, investigate and use information of tomorrow. We give them assignments based on the new innovations and techniques in the field of IT. We also assist the students to identify their own field of interest and get more in depth knowledge of their subject. They are provided with projects and assignments based on their learning to real-life conditions. Every faculty of our department explains different case studies in the field of Data Analytics, Cyber Security and IT.

What do you see as the college’s greatest strengths and how it can be enhanced?

“Outstanding learning and academic environment to the students”

Coming ILEADs strength, the 1st one is our enormous and well-established infrastructure with full greenery and recycled products which have been used for the decoration, furniture etc. We have a total of 3 campuses located at one single place along with a sports complex as well. Another one is of course our faculty which is highly specialized and determined towards educating youth and building nations. We are provided with various Faculty development programs in the campus itself. Along with, we have various co curricular activities in the fields of Cultural and sports that adds on the non-academic credit points which builds up a students confidence and also explores young talents. In addition, we have a great placement record increasing every year. The recent semester we had about 90 percent of the students placed in different organizations.

What valuable advice would you like to give to the students?

“Discipline along with learning”

Students must maintain regularity and discipline in their life, and also keep themselves updated with the trending skills and technologies, whatever the field of study they are in. Also, please don’t stop learning, there is no limit to it in any field.
